So I finally got around to actually reading about that Blues-Hurricanes trade, and it's really not as great as it sounds for St Louis. Faulk scores a lot of goals, but likely will be on the third pair in St. Louis. Edmundson is the Blues' Fistric: a guy who never scores, but doesn't give up anything either (i.e., A Wash). And giving up on Bokk just a year after drafting him ... he's one of the guys I thought the Stars should've drafted... is a major coup for Carolina down the road.

Overall, I'm not sure this trade actually makes St. Louis better in either the short term or the long term. Faulk will probably score 8 or 9 more goals than Edmundson, but allow 20+ more. Or maybe Berube will work some sort of magic on him and he'll transform into a two-way d-man.

Edmundson wasn't all that by my eyes. The extension is a big one, term and dollars, so that can definitely bite STL in the long run, but Faulk is a far better Dman than Edmundson will be, imo. Don't know anything about the prospect, Bokk, Bokk, Bokk.

Like Todd, I tried to do the same homework about this trade and it seems more that both teams got the type of player they needed. The Canes strenghtened their D with Gardiner, hence they were looking to add some toughness with a gritter like Edmunston, something they were were obviously lacking in last year's playoffs. On the other side, the Blues were looking to a goal scorer, kinda Shattenkirk in his best days, hoping he won't turn into a turnover machine.

Let's see what the prospects/picks will actually bring. Bokk is a cool name, but I prefer Koekkoek.

Edmundson is fine. He's a guy you can stick out there in limited minutes and he won'r hurt the team. Faulk is way better than Edmundson now, but that extension is going to look bad in the last few years. I believe Faulk has already started to decline.

Eventually teams will start to realize the smart thing is shorter term, more money for players like that.

Does it mean that Big Buff is no more in the Jets' plans? Cause if he returns, Winnipeg crushes the cap ceiling.

Oh *poo poo*. I'm calling the dreaded High Ankle Sprain. Out 6 months minimum.

The price is right: Doesn't seem so bad, I'd go with the ankle sprain, 2-3 weeks.

Considering that his last contract was a steal, the new one evens things a bit.

That's the worst argument in sports. They don't owe him a bad contract this time around because he didn't maximize his last one.

Maybe I was mistaken but I wasn't trying to make an argument. Just saying that having your #1 D-man at less than $5M per (comparable to Klingberg) for the last six years was a very good deal made by Poile. Having a extension an 8-yrs/$9m per is high, but apparently not shocking nowadays for that profile.

The reason to do it is you know he'll get that on the open market. Doesn't mean you won't regret it a lot in years five through eight, but it's the price to pay to keep him now.

It would be interesting if someone took a look at the eight season contracts signed in the cap era to see how many ended in regret.

Many other GMs would do the same contract, that's why Josi got it. They also don't mind overpaying a bit to keep their player and avoid the potential FA craziness during the season. Not that the contract won't bite them later down the line.

Does his not reporting save the team money? Maybe he's trying to do the "right thing?"

There are seven minutes left in their game, but the Avs have eight goals tonight. They scored six in the second period. 12 skaters have a point. I'm sure you can guess who doesn't.
