Didn’t they trade him because he blabbed to his wife about who other players were *fargin'* on road trips?

I forgot about that LOL. I can't think of anything more insufferable than a large circle of player wives spending their unemployed days feeding on drama.

Wasn’t there a Jean Claude Van Damme movie that was basically that?

Demers would be like the 5th best defenseman in the Stars' system.

The Flyers going goon squad is such a funny thing. They're going to be *fargin'* terrible.

Except that Tortorella isn't a bad coach. Not a very good one, but not bad. So they'll likely be not good enough to be good, not bad enough for Bedard.

Sounds like Torts would be a great fit for the Stars in two years when DeBoer and Nill get fired.

I am somewhat surprised he wasn't hired. I was listening to the most recent Puck Soup with the EP Rinkside guys and the Stars came up. The EPR editor's take was basically "why TF would you extend Nill, who has overseen one of the most mediocre teams in the NHL for years now?"

I think he got an extra year because part of his job is drafting and his 2017, 2020, and 2021 classes seem to be pretty strong, and could well be amazing.

All while he works to chase the best of his draft picks into demanding a trade because they're low-balling him.

Here's a fun attempt to figure out how the Stars dented the Cup.

And while there was some level of team success, Klingberg didn’t feel he was playing the kind of hockey that takes full advantage of what he does best. Making plays with the puck. Anaheim, he believes, will allow him to do that more.

“We wanted to activate the (defense) in Dallas too,” he said. “But it was very reserved. They want us to do that but at the same time we were defending, defending, defending and keeping the puck out of our net first. Obviously, that’s what you do here too. You don’t want to get scored on. But I feel like it’s more freedom to make plays.

“We’re all here for a reason. We can make plays and we know how to play hockey. Sometimes, you just got to let the player go out – you (just) give him the tools. This is how we want everyone to look the same without the puck. But with the puck, you have players like Zegras and those guys, you just let them play, right? Because they’re that good.”

Klingberg doesn’t hide that he chafed at playing under the defense-oriented system of former Stars coach Rick Bowness. Bowness obviously had success as Dallas got to play for its first Cup in 20 years. But the system also didn’t unleash creative players like Klingberg and Heiskanen.

“We always had really good conversations,” said Klingberg, talking about his relationship with Bowness, now the Winnipeg Jets’ head coach. “I thought Rick was really good in dealing with that. With people and players. He’s got a great reputation all throughout his career, too. That wasn’t really a problem.

“We had a lot of great meetings where we disagreed sometimes. Where we agreed sometimes. But at the end of the day, you’re there to win a game. He thought that we didn’t play good enough with the puck. So, the way we wanted to win the games was focusing on keeping the puck out of our net to be as successful as a team we could be possible.”

That’s all part of winning hockey. But Klingberg also saw that conservative approach as being restrictive, especially compared to the more open style he thrived in under Lindy Ruff. His two best seasons came with Ruff, years in which he earned a few top-five Norris Trophy votes.
Klingberg is excited again. He doesn’t see any limit for Zegras in terms of production and believes Terry can top the 37 goals he scored last season. He thinks the vets can still play at a high level. Mostly, he’s eager to getting back to the player he really is.

“It was frustrating because a lot of my game is creating and flowing,” he said. “You know what I mean? I’m still going to battle for every puck and be defensively involved. But I feel I’m an engine and I want to drive plays. There was not enough where we did that. Instead, we just hunkered down and (it was about) not getting scored on.”

5 goals is all the proof you need that they weren't thinking exclusively about defense. Bag skate to follow until they get the message.
