Nill is really dropping the ball here.
Now is the time to get rid of every veteran without a NMC.

Re: 2023 Trade Nonsense
Chychrun to Dallas for Harley, Bourque, Faksa, and a 2nd / possibly a 3rd / 4th to take Faksa and make the money work going forward. That actually seems like a real deal that could happen, it's not a rental, and it addresses a glaring team need.

Re: 2023 Trade Nonsense
I've seen a lot of writers talking about how the Stars need a defenseman, and Chychrun would be a great add. That's not an actual trade, that just seems like a deal that would work and would satisfy Nill's thing of no rentals.

Re: 2023 Trade Nonsense
I like that very much. I have big question marks regarding Harley's real potential, Bourque is clearly behind Stankoven and the likelihood of having all the three (Johnston, Stankoven and Bourque) as future top-6 forwards is statistically low, and Faksa because Faksa...

Re: 2023 Trade Nonsense
I know Harley's development got messed up because of COVID, but Chychrun is a legit top-4 defenseman who is young, under contract at a great number for a while, and fills a very glaring need for the Stars. You're not even going that much older - Chychrun is 24, Harley is 21. That's also pretty telling about where Harley is on the development curve. Bourque will probably be good, maybe even very good, but that's the cost of doing business and the Stars would be dealing from a surplus to fill a deficit.

I don't think Faksa has any value to them. You're throwing him
in there to get rid of him.

Re: 2023 Trade Nonsense
I'm throwing him in because he makes $3.25MM a year and that's the majority of Chychrun's cap hit. The Stars will need that space to make the money work next season when they only have about $5MM or so (currently) to fill a few roster spots.

Re: 2023 Trade Nonsense
All of that is predicated on the Stars being good, though, so it doesn't really matter.

Re: 2023 Trade Nonsense
And Arizona also needs bodies with some salary next season as well. Overpaying a 4th line center helps them hit the cap floor. Although on that team, Faksa is probably their second line center.
The only downside with Chychrun is he's a UFA after the next two seasons. He's young, on a great deal for his production, and has two more seasons on that contract, but it also means he's 100% hitting free agency to maximize whatever he can get. So if you trade a bunch of stuff for him, you're doing so because you want to contend this season and the next two.
I'm all for it because I always value good NHL players over magic beans.

Re: 2023 Trade Nonsense
Stars have enough salary coming off the books over the next few seasons that they could pay Chychrun market. I think it's a trade that makes sense for both teams and isn't too homer-ish. Bourque and Harley are first round picks that are well thought of by professional scouts, so I don't think it's overvaluing them through prospect goggles.
But Arizona is likely too dug in to move off of their obviously overinflated asking price (since he's been on the market for two years), and Nill is tootimid patient to do that. Despite it being very clear that, while you need homegrown talent, winners do often swing big for difference-makers.

Re: 2023 Trade Nonsense
No one will give him a contract this summer. He's done. He was fine last season, but it was a big outlier of the past few seasons.

Re: 2023 Trade Nonsense
That's a good add for a second-round pick. I don't understand why Nill isn't in on these types of deals.

Re: 2023 Trade Nonsense
Nill has already traded away the 1st and 3rd, right? Probably mean there is no scenario where he trades his 2nd to not have a pick until round four.

It’s a 2025 2nd rounder, so no excuses LOL.Troy McClure wrote: ↑Wed Mar 01, 2023 2:16 pmNill has already traded away the 1st and 3rd, right? Probably mean there is no scenario where he trades his 2nd to not have a pick until round four.

Re: 2023 Trade Nonsense
Guys like Eller aren't huge additions, but the Stars have almost no depth. Guys like Danonov and Eller can help ease that and do it better than random AHL scrubs that they keep trying.

I would have preferred Eller. Or Neiderreiter.

Re: 2023 Trade Nonsense
At this point we might as well just take back a retained Klinger plus a Ducks forward.
