The Stars and Stars media are doing fans a serious disservice by talking these guys up like they're all future superstars.

Re: 2022-2023 Stars Regular Season Thread
I can't stand that stuff. If a mid-first round pick becomes a middle-six NHL player, that's a really good outcome. Hintz is a ridiculous outlier for a second-round pick. Top-10 picks you need to become high-end talent, and occasionally you'll get a Pasternak in the late first round, but if a guy like Johnston becomes a productive second-line player, that's an excellent outcome as compared to what most guys become.

Or maybe one of those three does turn out to be a true star player, but to expect all three is just stupid.slaps wrote: ↑Tue Nov 01, 2022 11:45 am I can't stand that stuff. Re: 2022-2023 Stars Regular Season Thread
Most of those folks haven't been writing or following hockey long enough to know how to cover a first round pick who has carries even medium expectations, so they're just a little over excited. Their experience dates back to covering busts like Tufte and Dickinson who you knew were busts the moment they were drafted, so their coverage had to be along the lines of "well maybe Dickinson will be able to hold down a roster spot and get 10 goals on the 4th line?"

Re: 2022-2023 Stars Regular Season Thread
I don't think Dickinson was a bust. A regular NHL'er with the 29th pick is probably about average. He's a fine player with some skills. The issue is more that the Stars wanted / needed him to be a top-six guy and he wasn't. Getting a pretty good bottom-six guy with the 29th pick would be a win for most teams, but those teams also maximized higher picks and free agent signings to appropriately build out the rest of the roster.

By Stars drafting standards all three are generational talents.
Re: 2022-2023 Stars Regular Season Thread
There’s still time for these guys to be generational busts.

I guess something was holding him back for a while. I wonder what that could be.

How many goals against has our first line been on the ice for this season? 1?

Re: 2022-2023 Stars Regular Season Thread
So DeBoer is keeping lines together (generally), and is having players primarily carry the puck into the offensive zone instead of dumping it in routinely. It's amazing how changes that pretty much everyone said would be really good are, in fact, really good.

Re: 2022-2023 Stars Regular Season Thread
I think it also helps that Nill's additions to the roster are not guys he thinks gives Bowness what he wants. He didn't go out this off-season with the mantra of finding guys who were all breaks no gas like Michael *fargin'* Raffl. Nill added Marchment, Lundkvist, and Johnston to the roster.

I think we may be overblowing how good this team is offensively, but it certainly isn't worse.

Re: 2022-2023 Stars Regular Season Thread
To Troy's point, it is very telling that Studenic didn't make the club because all he had was speed. He couldn't do any other playmaking to support other players. Turns out Dellandrea and the resurrected JFK provide more because they can do more than just one thing.

Re: 2022-2023 Stars Regular Season Thread
I don't count 7 goals against a team actively trying to be bad as much of a sign of anything. That said, the Stars have to play the schedule given to them, and they didn't play down to Arizona like they have historically done. A good team (or a team that wants to be good) should kick the bohonkus out of Arizona. The Frugal Gourmet wrote: ↑Fri Nov 04, 2022 11:17 am I think we may be overblowing how good this team is offensively, but it certainly isn't worse.

Re: 2022-2023 Stars Regular Season Thread
Sure, but they also just had a bunch of typical Stars games where they couldn't score. The scoring is looking a little better, but it's not always amazing. I guess that happens to every team, though, so we'll see how frequent it is going along.slaps wrote: ↑Fri Nov 04, 2022 12:40 pmI don't count 7 goals against a team actively trying to be bad as much of a sign of anything. Re: 2022-2023 Stars Regular Season Thread
I’m happy with Nill finally looking to fill open spots with guys who have offensive upside instead of the past couple of offseasons where every addition was a dude who was a *fargin'* Comeau clone.

Re: 2022-2023 Stars Regular Season Thread
Yeah, zero percent chance Nill trades for Lundqvist if Bowness is still coach.

It's early but I like the Marchment signing. He's got decent hands and instincts, and is a nasty little sumbitch on the ice.

I can't trust either of these two people because they lack blue checks.
