Under the radar, the Coyotes' future in Arizona is decided today: Tempe's citizens will vote if they give the green light for a $2.1B project complex including shops, flats, hotels and a 16,000-seat arena.

16,000 seats is about 14,000 more than they need.

I’m terrified of the Coyotes moving to Atlanta or Quebec City and pushing the Stars back to the Pacific Division.

Good point. I like the central time zone.Troy McClure wrote: ↑Tue May 16, 2023 11:22 pm I’m terrified of the Coyotes moving to Atlanta or Quebec City and pushing the Stars back to the Pacific Division.
Re: 2022-2023 NHL Regular Season Thread
Don't worry, the Stars with stay in the Central. The Coyotes moving will lead to free a spot in the Central so another team would need to be moved in our divison. The League has struggled for years to reach an equilibrium with the 8 teams/4 divisons scheme that they won't be a major change now that things are settled. The Frugal Gourmet wrote: ↑Tue May 16, 2023 11:43 pmGood point. Anyway, it's gonna be either Houston, Kansas City or Salt Lake City; a central city so to speak. Because yes, the Coyotes are moving, the NHL will finally pull the plug. And it could be as soon as next season. I'm still wondering how it was not possible for them to move back in downtown Phoenix...

The NHL has Seattle now so it seems more likely another team would come to the Central.Troy McClure wrote: ↑Tue May 16, 2023 11:22 pm I’m terrified of the Coyotes moving to Atlanta or Quebec City and pushing the Stars back to the Pacific Division.

Re: 2022-2023 NHL Regular Season Thread
Houston is the obvious choice as it's by far the biggest market of cities without an NHL team.
I like being the only Texas team though.
I would not hate Kansas City because it's not Texas and (for a Texan like myself) a short drive. I like the idea of other NHL arenas that are in an easy day's driving distance.

Re: 2022-2023 NHL Regular Season Thread
Maybe part of the problem is voters knew they'd be handing massive tax breaks to an ownership group that's not equipped for the big time.
This whole thing was going to be $2.1 billion, and they couldn't muster more than $250k to try to talk voters into it? The NHL needs to force the Coyotes to be sold. This is not a serious ownership group.
https://www.dailyfaceoff.com/news/tempe ... on-tuesdayThe belief is the Coyotes side has spent less than $250,000 to activate the vote, opting for a bootstrap campaign, while the opposition has spent upwards of $2 million, backed by high-power labor unions who have not received a guarantee that they will be the ones building the project.

Re: 2022-2023 NHL Regular Season Thread
Salt Lake City is a small market compared to others in contention. They also currently have the Jazz playing in some dump built in 1991 that only seats 14,000 for hockey. If they move there, all they're doing is signing up for another arena gamble. There are better choices.

I want Houston so I can have another reason to sports dunk on Baron.

The Suns' owner raised his hand to bring them back in downtown PHX. I'm all for it.

Re: 2022-2023 NHL Regular Season Thread
Saw some folks talking about why voters turned it down, and it was mostly because they saw through the lie about it not costing taxpayers anything.
https://www.fieldofschemes.com/2022/11/ ... over-500m/Tempe plans to sell $220 million in bonds for land prep and infrastructure. This, according to the development agreement (section 7.5.4), would be paid off with a bunch of future tax money: 0.9% in city sales taxes on every dollar spent at the site, 3.75% in city hotel taxes, and 22.8% of future payments in lieu of property taxes collected by the city. (More on that in the next bullet point.) There could be additional bonds sold, but the total city debt is capped at $247 million.

Re: 2022-2023 NHL Regular Season Thread
I am not up on Phoenix politics but it seemed less like a labor union / tax break thing and more like the people just wanting to be done with a 15+ year circus sideshow of a franchise that's a laughingstock of the league.

Re: 2022-2023 NHL Regular Season Thread
For several reasons. The guy has more money than sense. The Coyotes would no longer be operating on the cheap with him in charge. He's also a guy who thinks his money makes him a genius, so there would be constant entertaining chaos coming from the Coyotes. This dude already has set the Suns ablaze with stupid moves when he took them over a few months ago and immediately traded four first round picks for a declining and aging Kevin Durant.

Wait, wasn't he the same dude who didn't want to share the Suns arena with the Coyotes this entire *fargin'* time?

I want to move them wherever it pisses off original 6 fans most.
Perhaps Mexico City.

Disney should buy the team and put it in Florida.
