Robertson rocks. I think there have been like four other Stars in franchise history to hit 40 goals.

Bowness sucks. The 4-on-4 was a complete encapsulation of how much he sucks, combined with putting out Faksa before Heiskanen in the shootout.
Winamp - it really whips the llama's ass.

wasn't the "good line" on the ice when the penalty happened and one of them going in the box? I'm sure they just needed a rest.

They were on the ice but only for 10 seconds (3 for Robertson who was the last to change). Then what does our brilliant head? He puts back the Faksa line who was by far the most putrid line of this game, to probably play shut down Vegas on a 4-on-4. Faksa had more TOI than Hintz and Robertson, not to mention Glendening nearly lost this game all by himself. But maybe it's a good idea to play the tie with your checking line that combines for a terrific -59 this season against a team that has no other choice than win, or try to have some "balanced scoring"...

Coach corner From the Athletic:

1) Why going with Faksa over Heiskanen, Gurianov or even Benn ?
“You try it,” Bowness said. “We told him what to expect, sometimes you’ve got to throw a surprise at them. It didn’t work. … You like to throw some guys out there, but they hadn’t played much in the last 10 minutes. Sometimes, man, you just — you throw Miro out there and he scores. You’re going to predict that?
Ok so if I understand correctly, you overuse Faksa in the last minutes of the game, so he has to go in the SO. Are we going to predict that Miro would score instead of #12? *Dang all Get out* what do you think? Faksa is now 0-2 in his carreer and he was put in after the first round of the SO.

2) On why putting Glendening/Raffl in place of Robertson
“Yeah, he was up, we just — I like him with Roope,” Bowness said. “Roope was in the box.”
Sure, Robertson totally sucks if he hasn't Hintz with him... Maybe Pavelski stinks too much.

Hey, hey, let's do some analysis on that 4 on 4.

Code: Select all

120 seconds of penalty means you need almost 3 shifts to cover

17:33 Penalty

17:33 - 17:46 Seguin and Namestnikov
17:46 - 18:22 Raffl and Glendening
18:22 - 19:03 Seguin
18:22 - 19:20 Benn
19:03 - 19:27 Pavelski
19:20 - 19:27 Namestnikov
19:27 - 19:33 Faksa and Glendening

19:33 End of Penalty

19:33 - 19:47 Faksa and Glendenning
19:33 - 20:00 Hintz
19:47 - 20:00 Pavelski & Benn

Benn 58 seconds : 58
Seguin 13 + 41 seconds : 54
Glendening 36 + 6 seconds : 42
Raffl 36 seconds : 36
Pavelski 24 seconds : 24
Namestnikov 13 + 7 seconds : 20
Faksa 6 seconds : 6

Sure, you have to fill the spots in this interval but Robertson didn't see the ice from the time Hintz get his penalty and Pavelski only appear in the last minute. In the mean time, the invisible Benn and the constantly out of sync Seguin were there. There's two minutes left, it's money time, cut your bench to give some rhythm even if you put your best line one shift over two. The turnover-prone Gurianov (who had only two shifts in the third, the last with ten minutes remaining) was also a risky option but not significantly worse than the atrocious Glendening. Same thing for JFK: a non-factor player that could have still been another well rested option.

Yep. Bowness mostly cycled through his second and third lines during the 4 on 4.

Right. His hottest top line player didn’t see the ice at all. His second best player only saw it for 20%. This means he gave 90% of this 4 on 4 time to his second and third line guys. You’ve explained my gripe well.

As you highlight, he gave over three times as much ice time to third liners over the only line who actually scores goals.

Top line - 10% (zero to his best goal scorer)
2nd line - 55%
3rd line - 35%

How many faceoffs did we win in the 4-on4? That's the most important stat.

Given this, do we have a consensus on the fact that Benn cannot be listed as a fourth-line player ?

2nd line - 55%
3rd line - 35%
50% of our available top line players got ice time.

Seguin - Lost
Glendening - Lost
Benn - Won
Faksa - Lost

So that's 1/4 during the 4-on-4.

So I’ll take a break from being a nitpicking jerk and speculate as to the coach’s decision for the last 2 1/2 minutes.

Roope goes to the box after a 10 second shift.
If you want keep your lines stable, you can:
A. Play the remaining top liners and hope they don’t get caught in a long shift, play the 2nd line next, then have Roope join
. 1. the 3rd line when he gets out…. yuck. Or
. 2. Play your top line again after only one shift off and have him back on his regular line for the last 27 seconds.
B. Play 2nd line, then 3rd, then 1st line and have Roope join a relatively rested 1st line again.

I think they were going for B, but the 3rd line was a *poo poo* show and after that Klingberg’s hideous turnover killed Robertson’s chance to rejoin Pavelski. We were stuck in our end for a face off after getting shelled for a minute and a half. So we send out the defensive line to avoid a regulation loss, which I think would have been catastrophic.

I wonder what percentage they won in the final 2 minutes of one goal games. I have no idea but it has to be pretty low.

You're not being a jerk. I threw out a casual observation after watching the game, and you looked into it. I still feel good about my observation.

Heck, look at the game as a whole. The Stars tied the game up early in the third. Did this mean Bowness pounded the gas trying to win it? Oh, *f-bomb* no. Robertson and Hintz saw their ice time decline in the 3rd. The #1 line in Bowness's heart played more in the third than in the first or second. He practically benched the whole 4th line and gave all their ice time to the 2nd and 3rd lines.

This team is going to have the fewest regulation wins of all playoff teams and fewer than three non-playoff teams. This is the plan.

And when asked about Robertson not playing during the 4 on 4, this is the bullshit answer Bowness gave. “Yeah, he was up, we just — I like him with Roope. Roope was in the box.” He's such a terrible coach.

I do question why we don’t play our top line more. Most other top teams play their top lines in excess of 20 minutes, whereas our top line averages around 18. Surely there’s a reason for it. If it’s because it’s Pavelski’s upper limit then I don’t see why we can’t slip in Gurianov with the other two score whores once in a while and get a few more shifts out of them.
