Jamie Benn back to back hat tricks on the final two games, if the past is any indication.

Season's over. Game's meaningless. On the road. Of course, Bowness is starting Khudobin.

A classic Khudobin rebound to end his tenure.

There’s still a decent chance he starts tomorrow.

Too bad we didn't get at least one point to maintain the tiny hopes to make the playoffs.

Just your friendly reminder that Debrincat is too short to be an impact player in the NHL.

Kinda hope the Stars are done drafting checking line grinders like Tufte and Dellandrea in the first round.

Tufte was/is highly skilled. His problem was that he dominated the Minnesota high school system with his size and speed, but that hasn't translated to domination at the AHL level. Part of his problem might be that he played for a defense-only college program, where he learned to be a grinder (and led that team in scoring as they went to the Finals like three straight years).

Dellandrea is also highly skilled. He's put up numbers in the OHL for years, let's give him more than 26 games at nine minutes a night to see what he's actually capable of.

That said, we have drafted a lot of grinders. Faksa, Remi Elie, etc etc.

Yes, without question.

I’d rather take the chance on having a skilled guy turn out to be able to do fun things with that skill because the draft is the best avenue to adding those kinds of players. It’s cheaper and easier to fill the checking roles of your forward group in free agency than it is the skill positions, so use your draft lotto tickets to chase the thing harder to find in free agency. If Tufte turns out to be the best version of himself in the NHL, he’s going to be a bigger Blake Comeau. Nice player for your third line, but those aren’t the hardest guys to find.

The thing is a number of the league’s veteran checking forwards are guys drafted in the first round who just didn’t pan out as offensive players but were still good enough to fall back into a depth role. If you draft a guy in the first round whose ceiling is as a checking line guy, then you’ve kinda wasted your shot at something better. Heck, Nichushkin was drafted tenth overall and has had to fall back on a checking line role where’s he’s doing fine now that he’s embraced it as his way to stay in the league.

If my first rounders end up on the 3rd/4th line, I’d rather that be because they didn’t quite pan out as hoped. I certainly don’t want that to be why I drafted them.

I took a look at Faksa's 2012 draft class and.... woof. This could well be the weakest draft of all time.
