DGB did an article where he lists each team's biggest-ever "downgrade" (retirements don't count):

https://theathletic.com/1822262/2020/05 ... gHoNGSrpy0

The one he does for the Stars is indeed a downgrade, but it pales in comparison to Hagman-> Avery.

So we get a first round bye? That’ll be the fourth time in 20 years we’ve been past the first round!

The Stars and the Avs get the most benefit from this pandemic. The Avs will get all of their big names back and healthy. The Stars got to put an end to their death spiral and also get to enter the playoffs with their nursing home forward unit fully healthy and rested.

I guess we will find out if all of the old and slow guys spent this time off doubling up on leg days. We will also see if months away changes their commitment to Bowness's stifling efforts to make every game a low shot 1-0 decision.

If they come back lacking even a bit of that, they could get torched by a fast team like Edmonton. Not that we've ever seen that happen before.

Alberta PM Jason Kenney made a "fantastic proposition" to the NHL, proposing to resume the season in Edmonton. I guess some players (like in Florida) will be thrilled to be ripped off their families and spend the next summer weeks in freakin' northern Alta.

I loved the idea of saying the trade deadline should be ignored up to the start of this playoff system. It would let teams make trades during the draft next month and would let teams make whatever changes they want to prepare for this new playoff system.

As it stands now, the NHL is pushing to hold a draft without trades, meaning a draft I would have no interest in watching.

A draft where the only tool available is your own drafting prowess seems massively unfair to the Stars.

The 2008 financial crisis ended up triggering a commercial real estate crisis that crushed the personal finances of Tom Hicks and sent the Stars to bankruptcy for their dark years. Now the Stars have an owner whose wealth comes from owning hotels and restaurants, and we know how those businesses are doing.

So... should we start to look at things and wonder if history is repeating itself?

Thankfully the team isn't hampered by any longer term, high dollar deals.

Not exactly. The top 4 teams in each conference play games against each other to determine seeding and are automatically in the first round.

Teams 5-12 have to play a 5-game qualifying round to determine who gets into the first round of the playoffs.

The Stars are number 5 in the conference.

EDIT: I just saw Bettman's video list the Stars as number 4 but the NHL website lists them at number 5. I guess they're going on winning percentage instead of points?

It is dumb what the league is trying to do. These play in games won’t count as playoff or regular season games. No idea what happens with the stats.

Jamie Benn with a display of humor. Surely another sign of the apocalypse!

Reading it in Jamie Benn voices makes it less funny.

Look, I'm sure Jamie is funny and personable with his teammates. He's just crafted the most boring public personality ever for some reason, even though his job is to entertain the public.

That’s weird. I’m sure I’ll have fun though. Even after losing in the -1st round.

It also means the most boring time of the year for this board could be kinda interesting.
