Stars to hire Jim Montgomery.

Postby Jason » Fri Apr 13, 2018 7:58 pm

He'd be a good fit, he has a opt out in his contract. Who knows what's going on in Carolina with a search for a new GM .
Breakdown of his system

"We're looking for a winning pedigree. We want to play fast. We want to play hard. We want to be very good defensively," Nill said. "We are going to look at all different angles. I want to be pretty open-minded about this. You are seeing some success with young coaches coming in, and there are some successful coaches out there that have great resumes. …

"The game is changing, and you have to evolve, and I think it is important that we look at every option."

Sheldon Keefe, Todd Nelson or Jim Montgomery.

Name Jamie Benn player/coach because of his excessive leadership.

He could coach how to turn over the puck in the NZ and score goals with no pressure. He’s really good at saying things are unacceptable.

Right now he’s in SoCal or some Island not giving a *poo poo*.

Good hopefully they are learning and finally realize you be d to develop the players. Like they should have did from the start.

Nill is expected to look for a coach who can relate to the younger players and incorporate them into the fast game the team is seeking. To be fair to Hitchcock, management wants to retain a lot of the elements that were established this season.

“The silver lining in all of this is that we are a better team today, that we are a more disciplined defensive team because of Ken,” Gaglardi said. “Now, we have to build on that.”

And the building could come on legs that are much younger - and possibly on minds that are much younger. Asked if he was open to hiring a new head coach with no previous NHL experience, Nill said yes.

“The coaching fraternity has almost become like the players now,” Nill said. “I’m amazed at the kids who come in at 18 or 19 and they don’t miss a beat, and I think we’re seeing that with coaches, too. The game is changing and you have to evolve, and I think it’s important for us to make sure you look over every option.”

My first choice is Derek Laxdal of the Texas Stars. I've known him for 20 years and watched him play for the Odessa Jackalopes and coach for several teams. He's been successful everywhere he's been. And considering the current draft success of the Dallas Stars, that says something to me. JMO!

Laxdal wouldn't be a bad choice. But I'm still on Team Keefe.

He does have ties to the franchise. Modano was already a skilled mouth breather even in the North Star days.

You mofos with your incessant praise have finally convinced me to subscribe to The Athletic (also, it's 40% off right now).

Here's a rambling read on Keefe. Short version: he's great with players, emphasizes risk, wins a metric fuckton of games:

Yeah, but did he win a cup in 1999? No?

Then he sucks.

He's wants a lot. He wants a coach who embraces speed and possession. He also wants a coach who is good at putting structure in place. He values the experience of veterans, but also wants the energy of kids. I think he wants the team to play the way the old Red Wings played, and also wants them to have their own Dallas Stars identity. It's a pretty tough balancing act.

If I am making a guess, I think he would love a coach who did what Todd McLellan did in San Jose.McLellan came from the Red Wings, incorporated the Red Wings ideal in a new and exciting way with the Sharks, and came up with a wonderful hybrid.

I think Nill would like to see something like that.

The Red Wings signed a dozen hall of famer free agents and paid two goalies a combined $20 million/year, got lucky on a couple late round picks, and then filled in the last two roster spots with 26 year old rookies. None of those strategies work anymore. It's not really a shock that the Red Wings collapsed into irrelevance less than five years after the salary cap was implemented.

Yeah. The Red Wings were built for the old NHL. What the Red Wings did when they were actually great (only really up to 2008) will not work now. Nill will lose his job if he tries that.

He'll be fine as long as Honka or Heiskanen is the Next Lidstrom. Having arguably the best d-man of all time really helps out along the margins.

Should ... should we wait for Trotz or Boudreau to be fired?

It sounds like it'll be a long process.
No interest in regular season Trotz. Boudreau I don't think he is going anywhere.

At this point just making the playoffs consistently would be an incredible achievement.
And who knows, maybe all Trotz really needed to go deep was to coach a shitty team LOL.

Trotz is probably the worst postseason coach of all time (not counting guys who only made it once or twice).

Both Dave Tippett and now Glen Gulutzan are available if the Stars want to keep the re-hire theme going.

Hire Tippett first. Gully is younger, so he’ll be better poised to take over in five years after Tippett is fired.
