That's almost unheard of for a new (old) coach coming in. Wonder if this illustrates some disagreement in the organization? Gaglardi/Lites have history with Hitchcock - maybe Nill isn't quite as sold.

Mike Heika wrote:Modano said it will be interesting to see who Hitchcock names as assistant coaches. Modano joked on Twitter that he was available for the job, but said on the phone that won't be happening.
"Hitch told me one time that I wouldn't like the hours," Modano said. "I think he's right about that."
But Modano said Hitchcock needs the proper buffer, and also needs assistant coaches who can connect with today's younger athletes.
"Kids really are different today, I can see that," Modano said. "Hitch knows it and we've talked about it, but I think the assistant coaches will be a big part of how he deals with the younger players."

This. This all day.
I'm sure there are a lot of factors as to why it's only a single season deal, but from a purely selfish fan POV, it's hard not to wonder if the org is only doing this as a quick fix for the abysmal ticket sales and doesn't give a damn about contending. It would explain why Nill displayed ZERO patience in hiring a new guy i.e. the right guy.
