No expansion makes the most sense of all.

Quebec has formally applied for expansion. Just like the Jets, perhaps the Nordiques are on their way back.

This sorta dashes my dreams of the team becoming Les Étoiles du Québec.

Re: NHL Expansion
Seattle is still in the mix, and a much better contender than QC. There just isn't an arena deal done yet, so there's no point in any of the potential ownership groups paying $10 million to the NHL just because they decided to set an arbitrary deadline.

I'm not even worried. Just get The Rock in there and he will protect our shiny new Seattle arena by singlehandedly defeated the earthquake with his fists.

Re: NHL Expansion
As noted by DownGoesBrown, the NHL's press release is really pissy. The NHL only got two applications, and they are obviously very annoyed by it.
Update on NHL expansion application process
http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=775295
I guess the NHL expected a bunch of people to fork over $10 million (with $2 million being nonrefundable) all for the privilege of finding out if they can possibly be considered as a future NHL location. Let's see... I can give the NHL $10 million, or I can wait for the Coyotes to fall apart and give the NHL nothing to take that problem off their hands.
Apparently, only Mr. Foley and Quebecor have the confidence in their ability to secure an arena and suitable ownership capability to move forward with this process.
We now intend to focus exclusively on the two expansion applications that have been submitted in accordance with the previously announced process. The process we have outlined for qualified applicants includes at least two more stages of documentation submission. We will provide no further updates until there is something substantive to announce.

Don't forget the expansion fee of $500MM, which is about double the average value of an NHL team.

Re: NHL Expansion
$10 million up front with no guarantee, plus a looming $500 million expansion fee, plus $300-500 million to build an arena. Oh yeah, and then you actually have to pay your players $75 million or whatever the cap is now. This whole process isn't cheap, and it's silly to ask potential owners to start ponying up cash with no guarantees.
However, I also understand that the league doesn't want to get Spano'd again. So you want some proof that the rich guys who are trying to buy into your league are actually rich this time.

Re: NHL Expansion
I wish we had access to the application. I would have enjoyed submitting one with an IOU stapled to it.

Yes, TSF definitely would need to submit one as a board project.

As long as we all agree the arena is to be named Fort Awesome.

Can we have the team logo be the Flayed Man of Fort Awesome, only upside down on crossed hockey sticks?

Re: NHL Expansion
Can you yanks explain to me why Las Vegas doesn't have a single pro sports team (NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL)?
I mean, I get that it's a desert with strict drug laws, but surely its population can take pride and sustain just ONE of those without having to rely on beligerent drunken tourists right?

City population is less than 600k and the entire metro area is only the 30th in size in the US, putting it at the very edge of the size of areas that have teams

Re: NHL Expansion
Oh. I had no idea the population was that low and the downtown area that small! I'm only familiar with TV/movie Vegas, so a lot of bright lights, pawn shops and shitty tattoo parlours.
LOL that description already sounds better than Phoenix.
