I’m pretty good with this plan. It’s dangerous and would cause injuries to have the players go from being off for three months straight into high intensity playoff games. So you’ve gotta play some games before jumping straight into playoffs, you don’t have enough time to finish the entire regular season, and preseason games in the middle of the season would be dumb. So you put a little juice on these games by putting seeding at stake. It’ll probably shake out unfairly based on the regular season standings, but I think it’s about as good as you can hope for given the situation.

The teams are going to be pretty fatigued going into next season if it starts on time.

I don’t know. For half the teams participating in this, they’ll be done playing in three weeks or so, right?

There’s no way them bullshits don’t end up shortening the next season.

“Bettman said training camps will begin “not earlier than the first half of July.” Players have asked for a three-week training camp. If that request remains intact after they begin training in small groups next month, then the earliest the puck can drop is in late July or early August.”

Bettman also said next season could start with the Winter Classic.

"I want to make clear that the health and safety of our players, coaches, essential support staff and our communities are paramount". Of course, we are all convinced of that. Governments are still struggling to restrain the pandemic and now Buttman plans to send hundreds of people there or there.

With this beautiful solution, teams that were almost sure to miss the playoffs (Chicago, Montréal) have now a shot for the Cup. And if they lose in their respective sugar best-of-5 round, they will be in the draft lottery. Totally fair. And for seeds #1 to #4, a simple round-robin to determine the final position just to generate a bit of competition and interest? I don't think so. And we will definitively not have a playoffs hockey level, not even close. It will be like soccer or bandy.

They are speaking to start the 2020-2021 season in late December, even January. And then what's next? Shortened season? Stanley Cup in Sept. 2021? According to some insiders, it will take 2 to 3 years before going back to full normality (schedule, security measures, etc.). I know the Stars fall on the good side with this, but the whole concept rises too many questions that won't be answered. Hope the players will turn that down. The most tragic part is, like many people, I will be -- always am -- a *goddess* and watch if they go ahead with that *poo poo*.

I disagree with the later start though.

That may disrupt my being entertained and is unacceptable.

This could be an opportunity to reset a lot of norms that have just naturally evolved over time and pick something that makes more sense. Is it really best for the NHL to spend the first half of their season in complete irrelevance going up against the NFL and MLB playoffs? Maybe a later start makes more sense going forward and is something that sticks.

I think it makes way more sense. Sure, costs may increase for arenas to operate in hotter months, but perhaps that is offset by better attendance and more television viewers.

You also forgot college football in there too. The fall is just a terrible time for the NHL to be going.

I like the schedule as is. Maybe shorten the season by 10 or so games, but instead of starting later, end earlier. Be done by Memorial Day.

So, I'm assuming no fans will be allowed to attend any of these games?

I'm not arguing against this idea for obvious reasons. However, part of the magic and excitement of playoff hockey is the crowd. No crowd = boring.

I should be allowed to attend. How much danger is one fan really? I'd even be willing to let one of you sit on the other side.

Florida's gonna feel right at home for their play-in game(s). Advantage Panthers.

They should have a contest for permitting like one fan per section at the game. Best trash talker wins. It would be awesome to hear them chirp the players without a crowd drowning them out.

Looks like the Stars are quietly moving on from Les Jackson.

Is this for cost savings? Is this because of how Jackson handled Gaglardi's desire to insult the players last season? Is it a signal of a bigger change of direction in the organization?

Who knows.

11. For almost 35 years, Les Jackson’s been a Star. Hired as an assistant coach when the franchise was still in Minnesota in 1985, he stayed with the organization every season but one since. His contract will not be renewed. End of an era, for sure. He’s been a huge part of that organization’s success.

Cost savings. You’re going to see a lot fewer people with nebulous titles like “special advisor to the GM” as teams tighten their belts.

I'd say that Les Jackson ought to do more thinking and less jackson.

The Stars let the rights of 2018 4th rounder Curtis Douglas expire because the franchise can't afford to offer him a contract.

Yeah, Gaglardi is broke.

That's too bad. He's a towering, huge guy with skills... an easy third-line fan favorite.

Too bad, I heard he could've been another Janmark but with less offensive upside.

If he truly had skills they would have signed him. I think what you mean is "He's super tall and has surprising skills for how tall he is, but still sucks".

I think Todd vastly underestimates how difficult it is to be even a third-liner in the NHL.
