Oleksiak has looked good this year. I guess second time's the charm. He's a really solid third-pair guy.

After seeing that bomb last night, he really needs to defer less and shoot more.

Denis Gurianov (who creates rush chances at the ninth-highest rate among all regular skaters),

Hard to know what the team thinks of their defense. Today, Sekera was the ice time leader, and he was the primary penalty killer playing beside Lindell. They're recalling Fedun from his conditioning stint, even though they never want to play him. They're also in this strange place where they've been rotating Johns, Polak, and Sekera as scratches as well.

Considering their defensive numbers, I'm surprised they'd waste the time and resources to get a d-man instead of a forward, but maybe I shouldn't be surprised.

Was looking at the Western Conference standings this morning and of the current playoff teams, the Stars have more regulation wins than exactly two teams (Calgary and Arizona). They have 9 overtime wins, with the next highest of the playoff teams being 5 (Vegas). Just another indication of how little margin of error the Stars generally have.

Addendum: I then looked at the East. Pittsburgh has 8 OT wins, Washington 6, Tampa 6 and Toronto 7. Stars still have relied on it the most (or been the most successful at it).

Haven't some people proposed 3 points for regular win, 2 for OT win, 1 for OT loss, and zero for loss as a way to help differentiate between teams that can truly win versus teams that hang on for the win or ride loser points to the playoffs?

Yes. Don't have time to do the math to see the difference, but I did go back and look - 27% of the Stars games this year have gone to OT (17 of 62). The good thing is, they have only lost (I believe) six of those. So glass half full?

Sure, it benefits the Stars this year, but I'd be in favor of rewarding teams more for winning in regulation. Even the win with 3 on 3, while exciting, is definitely not the same two points as a regulation win, and for sure isn't with a shootout.

Of course, the NHL loves parity, so it will never do something like this.

It's the case in Europe and international hockey. I computed the difference some time ago and it didn't made much of a difference, maybe the 9th and 10th teams flipped positions in the rankings. However, it might bring more changes in the case of a tight race.

A win's a win whether it's in regulation or OT, but not really in the case of a shootout. I would surely stay as it is in the NHL.

in the Central, Winnipeg is 9 points behind with 2 more games, the top-3 is pretty much settled unless the Stars collapse and both Winnipeg and Nashville win all. Given the last games of these 2 teams, that doesn't seem to take this path. But it's still possible to face the Blues in the first round.

Great read (with gifs!) of how shitty our offensive coaching has been:

https://www.defendingbigd.com/2020/3/9/ ... nt-improve

Basicaly, we have no offensive structure, no forecheck, and back off and play defense even when we have possession. So, eyeball test has been 100% correct. The only reason we had a good Feb was because we shot 21% on the PP, which, you know, is totally repeatable.

I went back and looked at the shift chart for the last six minutes, and I think the problem is as much about a depth of offensive options as it is coaching decisions. Here was the usage over the last six minutes:

No ice time at all
Dowling
Janmark

Barely any ice time
Cogliano (one 27 second shift; no ice time in last five minutes)

Two shifts
Gurianov-Hintz-Pavelski
Benn-Seguin-Perry (closed out the last 1:40 or so with Bishop pulled)

One shift
Dickinson-Faksa-Comeau (Comeau was the 6th attacker to close out the game)

Gurianov-Hintz-Pavelski were finishing their last shift right after Bishop was pulled, so they were not options to be the 6th attacker.
Of the fresh legs to put out there as the 6th attacker, the choices were Dowling, Janmark, Cogliano, Dickinson, Faksa, and Comeau. Bowness chose Comeau. Yeah, Comeau isn't very good, but who on that list is?

That's the crucial question. Not Comeau, ok, then who...?

By looking at this problem on the other side, why not considering that you will likely finish the game (goalie pulled) with at least Gurianov and/or Hintz, hence not putting his line before and going rather with the guys that only had few TOI in the last five minutes or so. It goes back to the coaching aspect, I don't know, just wondering...

Heiskanen is this situation is a no-brainer.

Klingberg, I assume yes (he's the other defender that can actually score) but he's a turnover machine. Big gamble but there's no other choice at the blue line

I could live with Perry there, in the crease, as the screener/agitator. Pavelski in the centre sneaking for the garbage goal, well...

Then, fast guys with good hands and capable to take milliseconds decisions. Gurianov, Hintz, I would even go with Cogliano at that point. Faksa ? Meh...

I guess you put Seguin because you have to. But Benn, sorry, given the last games he made, he just doesn't deserve to be put in a such situation. Again, he will always be in, no matter what.

Somehow, we are screwed.

With the net empty, there has to be "some" attention paid to defense, so putting out a player that isn't going to turn it over, but might have a little offense. Comeau.

Comeau turns the puck over pretty regularly, especially because he's slow.

Fancy stats probably say different, but I don't consider Comeau good at maintaining puck possession.

Stars are in desperate need for offense. Perfect time to call up a checking winger.

So the Stars reassigned Kiviranta to the AHL. Don't wanna pay the guy NHL money during the stoppage if they don't have to.
