So Nill (and/or TGags) still have an issue with Seguin/Benn scoring:
(from Q&A on The Athletic)

Q: This might be a tough question to answer, but your player stats aren’t very high. Are your higher-paid guys like Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn somewhat limited offensively by the way the team plays or is there room for them down the stretch to do more offensively? If you know what I mean.

A (Nill): Right, is the system restricting them or is there more … I think there’s more to give yet. I truly believe. Our power play really struggled early, now it’s gotten going a bit more lately. Power play is the freedom for these players to do (things offensively). Our power play has been subpar, you look at our players’ stats, and say what you want, that’s a big part of goal scoring. It’s hard to score in this league and if you’re not on the power play, you’re not getting a lot of goals. That’s just a fact. I think there’s more for high-end players to give there … And even our support players, I think there’s more to give there, too. I think we can be a more determined team in the offensive zone, possession time and all that. … I think we can still be more of a possession team in the offensive zone and I think that’s where our game will change a little bit.

But I would obviously like for us to work on and improve everything, including the offense.

It pulled the Stars from being out of the playoffs for something like five straight seasons into being an every other season playoff team.

Hockey stat nerd looks at Bowness as coach in this Twitter thread. Long story short: the offense is worse, and he doesn't trust young players.

That's probably a result of Winter Classic sales.

-no regulation wins in 6 games
-scored three non-empty net goals in regulation in a game only twice this month
-Seguin, Miro, and Klingberg have combined to score zero goals in 2020

I think the stat is, in 16 of the last 17 games, the Stars have not led going into the second period.

I predict we get bounced in the first round rather badly.

The real question is what do you do next year if the goalies take even a half step backwards? We’ve seen what it looks like in a handful of games this year when you’re not getting elite goaltending. Right now Bishop and Khudobin are both top 7 in GAA and sv%. What if they drop to the middle of the pack?

Yes. The record with Bowness is deceptive. They haven't looked great to me at all since the firing except in short spurts within games.

Again, they are winning in spite of Bowness, not because of him.

I'm not in the room, obviously, but every time I hear Bowness talk, I have not been impressed with him as a head coach. He seems to be a perfect assistant (see Wade Phillips) - but not what I picture as a leader of a team.

Just heard a comment from Bowness after the Leafs game where he said they got enough scoring chances and scored three goals, so he was satisfied with the offense. What disappointed him were the chances given up on defense.

What a loser’s mentality to call three goals good enough. Three goals a game is 18th in the league right now (and sadly nine spots higher than where the Stars sit). The Stars are by far the lowest scoring team of any currently holding down a playoff spot.

As well as Gallant.

Let's bring them to Gags' bar. Row of twelve B52 shooters each, the first to complete the row wins the game. Best-of-7 series, series winner takes the head coach position.

1. When the Stars have success, it’s often defined by the details.

It’s through the minutiae that they play the most effective, boring hockey in the NHL. When games are boring, the Stars are typically winning. They’re locking down the other team and nothing really happens.

When games are exciting and provide substantial entertainment, they tend to end poorly for the Stars.

That's about as accurate as I've seen. It's also why I don't care anymore if I miss a game or not. I used to really look forward to games, but even if they are winning, I'm more likely to fall asleep watching the game than to enjoy it.

Effective to get into the playoffs - yes
Effective to get deep into the playoffs - almost certainly not

It's such a small margin this team plays where one bad bounce ending up in their net can make a game very difficult to win thanks to their massive struggle to produce offense. Also, this team is very good in 3v3 OT, and that doesn't carry over in the playoffs.

If boring makes the playoffs, where boring is the standard, I'm sure that is every teams' aim. I don't think good defensive hockey is boring though. And no coach wants to see exciting hockey, especially in the playoffs. Of course every team wants to score and score more, but the good teams play defensive hockey first and are able to straddle the line, allowing more offense. It's not easy. But that makes it exciting.

So apparently for the A’s now it’ll be Klingberg/Comeau on the road, and Seguin/Lindell at home. Whatevs.

Half measure because Bowness probably doesn’t have the authority to strip Benn of the C.

Listened to Bowness on the Ticket just now, which is really the first time I’ve heard him talk much. And you know what? He’s not a bad interview.

I think he wears the interim tag well when it comes to dealing with the media. He’s not as guarded as a lot of coaches because he doesn’t need to be. He seems like a nice guy for sure.
