If you’d asked me yesterday if he’d get called up I would’ve said fat chance of that happening.

Fun article on The Athletic about Stars player thoughts on overtime and 3-on-3 and shootout.

https://theathletic.com/1598745/2020/02 ... egulation/

Couple of funny/interesting responses:

Miro Heiskanen: “I’d like 3-on-3 continuous until someone scores. I would like that better than shootout. At least 10 minutes would be good, then shootout. Someone’s going to score, usually, in 10 minutes on 3-on-3.”

Of course the young guy who is a great skater wants it to last. A bunch of the older players said they already play enough games a season so it is good to have it end after 5 minutes.

Jamie Benn: “I don’t really care either way, to be honest. I don’t mind the shootout.”

No opinion/low energy Jamie Benn. Such a terrible interview.

Roman Polak: “I like the shootout. I want to get home sometimes. I have a wife and kids. If we have 3-on-3 until a score, we could play forever … I can sit on the bench for five minutes or 10 minutes, I don’t care. Maybe ask my wife who is pissed when I come home late.”

Funny. I wish he were better at defense because I like him as a person. I can tell why he's a popular locker room guy.

Jamie Oleksiak: “I’m watching either way, but 3-on-3 I think is exciting. Shootouts are so specific, but 3-on-3 is a little more skill, still a general team game of hockey but faster. So I’d personally prefer that.”

Stephen Johns: “Chances are I’m not playing in either, but I think I prefer to just play the 3-on-3 without the shootout. I did grow up wanting to watch shootouts, but it doesn’t really matter.”

Screw the SO. It's an individual skill game that shouldn't be reflected in the general standings. OK for having a 10-mn 3vs.3 overtime, it's not the end of the world to add a bit of that and I agree that most of the time they would be a goal in that timespan. The OT winner gets the extra point; if not, let it a tie with one point for each team.

But 3v3 OT is a 3 aside skill game that shouldn't be reflected in the standings.

I say do 3 on 3 overtime and then a tie. To me the shootout used to be fun and still can be sometimes. However, it seems dumb to tie crucial points in the standing to a specific skillset, especially for the goalie, that isn't really used during games at all.

Instead of overtime have a panel of judges determine which team had the most aesthetically pleasing performance.

And the team with the least aesthetically pleasing performance gets the point.

The panel is entirely made up of 60 year old grumpy Canadian writers, so you'd better spend OT hitting and fighting and don't care try a drop pass.

The ability to stop breakaway shots and penalty shots seems like a necessary skill.

The setting totally changes it versus a breakaway during a game with a guy chasing him down.

There's an idea... have a defender that starts behind the penalty shooter and then tries to catch him.

In "festival" type tournaments (running clock, more for fun than standings), the fouled player lines up at the center line, with all of the other players on the blue line behind them. Fouled player then skates in with everyone else chasing him. If you are fast, you'll get a chance. If you aren't, well ....

Just replace OT and the shootout with DudePerfect trick shot competitions. Fans would stick around for that *poo poo*.

I like it how it is. The 3 on 3 is fantastic and usually produces a goal in five minutes. The shootout is fun, now that it occurs less frequently. But less goals are being scored and teams are getting better at holding the puck. So they will have to consider a change at some point.

I like Tortorella’s suggestion: 3-on-3 until someone scores or dies.

I know interim coaches are a dime a dozen in the NHL, but I still think it's a bit odd to hear the head coach talk about how he didn't want to be in this position in the first place.

Rick Bowness after yesterday's game:

“Listen, again, I keep saying this: I didn’t go to Dallas to take over this job. This wasn’t a job I applied for. They asked me to finish the year, and that’s what we’re going to do. It’s a big difference now being a head coach in this league than it was 15 years ago. There’s a big difference. There’s a lot more demands on your time; there’s a lot more coaching involved.”

Having said that, he did apply for the Ottawa job when it was last open.

Maybe what he doesn't want is to have Jim Lites as a guy he has to answer to.

As the team travels around, especially in Canada he gets asked about, being head coach, the whole Monty deal, what comes next for him, and after days there, it’s like ok, enough.

Just got back from the Montréal/Ottawa road trip. It was nice to leave the frozen taiga to get a bit of springtime down there. Temperature around the 10s in Montréal, some sunshine, terraces open, birds signing, I wasn't used to that. I managed to get a seat in the 100s in the Centre Bell, hoped not to get fully surrounded by Habs fans, which was the case. Some thoughts:

- Didn't like the first half of the game 'till being down 3-0 with a shaky Bishop in goal. Quite noticeable empty seats whereas the place used to be full packed. Even ahead by three, the atmosphere didn't match the standards, people there have already thrown the towel on this season.

- Loved the game scenario though. At 3-2 Habs fans started to make the wave until the Stars tied it. Everybody sat down all of a sudden and I was the only guy in the area to stand up and cheer, which caused me some arguing with some fellas in the back. I was first sorry about the triple tripping on Armia in the OT that wasn't called by the refs until I watched the replay. Then came the usual Habs whining.

- Seguin OT winner was priceless, such a great feeling to get out with the win, moreover against a team that I truly despise.

- Not a lot of Stars fans but I met some weird ones dancing in the lower level after the game.

The next day, quite a different scenery in Ottawa. Seats are much more affordable, I easily got one in the third row next to the Stars bench, really close to the action.

- Such a pain in the ass to get to an arena about 20 mi. out of town, lost in a middle of a farm field. Traffic jam before and after the game, I really hope they will build a downtown arena soon.

- Much more Stars fans there, with lots of kids and families. Ottawa is way more family-friendly for that with a lot of animation with kids.

- Oleksiak is 11'10"/476 lbs, not 6'7"/255 lbs as mentioned on the NHL website. That guy is a beast, if he speeds on you, just bend your eyes, lit a cigarette and wait.

- That Gurianov is also a piece of a guy, his speed is really impressive as well as his shot. I could really used his physical way more efficently like when he made a beautiful nice check on Seguin. Still work to do with his play without the puck and his defensive game: that turnover in the OT was a bit embarrassing.

- The 1992 Senators coach Bowness has the exact same face as the 2020 Dallas coach Bowness. Just a bit more of grey hair.

- Pavelski... oh my. You can see all the suffering on his face when he puts one skate in front of the other, seems such a painful thing to do. I kept on repeating myself how little impact he has on the game until he scored the game-tying goal. Useless, but not that useless...

- Despite his error on the Sens' second goal, I was impressed with Johns. I doesn't seem he stayed away for about two years.

- Khudobin clearly won the loser point. He was totally abandoned by the team. 45 SOG by the Sens, that's considerable. Third game in the fourth day of an eastern road trip, you could really see the tank was empty. But the Sens were the better team. They played full offense hockey without complex, they deserve credit.

- Ottawa fans are gentlemen. Some of them told me they were sorry for the win.

- 5 pts over 6 on the overall road trip, mission accomplished.

Of course Ottawa fans were sorry for the win. They've got a real chance at two top-5 picks this year if they can just tank properly.
