Then we'll have Nichushkin's replacement.

The Athletic did a breakdown of somewhat recent drafts, and yes, the Stars had freaking terrible drafts.

If you go by a WAR-based analysis of the 2014-2017 picks, the Stars are next to last with the Rangers being dead last. Those drafts were almost all busts and garbage.

But that wasn't enough. They also wanted to try to do some weighting for where teams were picking so that teams always picking late in the draft aren't taking it in the shorts for failing to draft star players. Then they also tried to look at it on a games played basis to see who is fining guys who are every day players. No matter how they sliced it, the Stars come up as a terrible, terrible drafting team.

After the Rangers, the Dallas Stars might just have the poorest draft record in the league. Among first-round picks in this span, Julius Honka looks like a bust, while Denis Gurianov has delivered underwhelming results for being the 12th overall pick in the star-studded 2015 class. Miro Heiskanen is the exception and Roope Hintz appears to be coming along nicely, but if you extend the Stars’ draft window all the way back to 2009, you can see just how long they’ve struggled at making first-round picks.
. . .
Excluding the Dellandrea pick because that was made just last summer, the Stars have had a whopping eight top-15 picks since 2009 and the only pieces of any real significance they have are Heiskanen and Faksa.

Then they looked at picks after the first round... and the Stars again are 2nd worst in the league, so there was no consolation to be found there.

Then they looked at the current prospect pool by using some prospect rating dude's evaluation, and the Stars have a below average prospect pool. They fall into the category of a team that is winning too much to get good picks yet has a poor prospect pool. When talking about the Panthers, the author wrote, "I’d definitely say that [the Panthers] have a brighter future than say the Stars who look like they’re in a tricky situation in that they’re too good to get high picks yet aren’t true Stanley Cup contenders and have an aging roster with limited help coming through the prospect ranks."

Even worse if you include all of the 2000s.

We're in a pretty decent spot, really. Early enough that there should be a couple of good offensive talents (I'd be stoked if we got Kaliyev or Suzuki or Hoglander, and Tomasino/Lavoie/Brink will probably all play way better than 10 guys picked before them) available, but not so early that Nill is pressured into making some sort of Glennie-type mistake.

But Nill will probably pick some huge, slow bruiser, because Blues Won The Cup.

I like the bow tie. And that Seider was more shocked than anyone.

I also have a lot more faith in Yzerman than Nill.

With two teams already going Full Nill, we might even get a top-10 guy to pass up on.

I think we have a solid chance at drafting Generico Grinderman.
He’s a good Canadian kid, strong work ethic, plays hard, good size, good two-way player, plays a disciplined game, hard to knock off the puck, and a good guy in the room.
Thoraly Birch.

Probably desperate to trade down to lower expectations on his selection. If a dude picked 28 overall doesn’t work out, you tend to be forgiven.

Actually the smart play is to trade down amd get a 2nd. Basically there's a ton of good players witj tremendous upsides still available. And a bunch will still be available at 21 or 23.

Unless Caufield is still sitting there at 18. *f-bomb* trading down if thats the case.

And does this mean that he’s finally realized that he can pick the player that he wants at the appropriate spot by trading down, or will the first guy that we pick be even further down now and projected for the 5th round?

Still plenty of fantastic picks available. So naturally Nill will find a way to trade our pick for Ben Lovejoy.
