According to RDS, Marner refused a long-term contract worth $11m/year, he's seeking for a 3-year deal.

Marker is using Matthews as a comp, which is dumb. He’s a winger, not a centre.

Starting to see some more RFA deals get done right before camp.

I got a ranch in downtown Dallas/I buy diamonds by the ton/Chase cuties in my Cadillac/Drill oil wells just for fun/But when it comes to boots, I need a deal/That will fit me right, toe to heel/So I get my boots at Western Warehouse.

Short term, high money bridge deals are going to become the new normal for high-end players.

Or going to abritrage after the expiration of entry-level contract if no deal is reached. Let's throw that in the middle of the CBA renewal discussions and run away.

Which is the correct way these things should work when it comes to paying players when they are most productive versus paying them based on their free agency status. Long term, I bet the end result is lower salaries (as a percentage of the cap) or the mid tier and low end UFAs as more cap money gets shifted to these younger star players.

I was listening to the Spittin' Chiclets podcast, and they seemed put out by the fact that guys are getting paid before they "prove it." I guess I kind of get that, but it sure seems to work out a lot better to pay guys for what they will do in the prime of their career as opposed to a buyout for the final 3 years of a deal because you gave a guy $8MM a year at age 29 or 30 for what he did before and will likely never repeat.

And are they even right? Most of the guys getting these big deals put up great numbers. Maybe it was only for one season, but I can’t think of any dude getting a big raise who didn’t have at least one quality season.

I'm starting to suspect that Johns's career may be over at this point.

Save you a click: nothing happens with the Stars defense with Johns out. Nobody was planning on having him this year anyway. That’s why they have 8 other D signed.

Better to end it and keep a healthy-ish brain than try and keep playing and maybe suffer extreme brain damage.

Eaves bums me out. Great guy. I’m so happy he had success, even if it was too brief. Happy that it was enough to get him a good money deal.

Ah Marcus Pettersson. The player that the Pens homer voted for over Miro for the Calder.

Eaves is the only successful example I can think of of us selling high. We fucked up on Boucher, Morrow, Ott, and Jamie ...
