When I started playing hockey as a kid (like 30 years ago), we were already playing on crossed-ice splitting at the blue lines (two rinks, the middle part was dedicated to team benches for all teams as is was easier to go on and off the ice). I think we were playing 4 vs 4 and we also used smaller goals.

5 on 5 is really a terrible way to learn as an adult. You go out, play your one hour game, and maybe the puck is on your stick for a total of 30 seconds.

It is. I'm still terrible, but terrible is a significant upgrade from where I was a couple of years ago when I was only playing once a week. I was getting frustrated, so I decided to play more. It helped a lot. Now I play two or three times a week, and I'm so much more comfortable and confident about everything. It probably helped my skating more than anything else.

You would not believe (ok, maybe you would) the howling from parents when USA Hockey implemented what is referred to as the "American Development Model" (ADM) - which included no more full ice games for the little ones. Take all of the wussification of America themes and multiply by hockey parent (who are, of course, the most sane and disciplined of folks).

They did the same thing for U.S. soccer to the same effect not long ago. Although it was always smaller fields for younger kids, they made them stick to those even longer to generate more touches and such. They wanted to copy the development style of what European and Latin American countries do.

American parents are weird that way. They apparently want their kids to immediately start playing the full actual sport. Um... why?

Yeah, Charlotte was on a big field 3 years ago and moved back to the smaller fields right after. No one complained that I remember. I mean, it makes total sense. All they were doing on that big field was bunching up in a scrum without any real soccer happening. On the little fields they get way more touches and complete way more passes.

I'm totally in favor of it.

Until recently no one payed attention to soccer except as a place for parents to put little kids born without the talent to play more traditional American games.

The talent... and the intelligence. Soccer is also way less expensive.

I don't get the point. It looks terrible compared to a real game. Even the EA game looks better.

I think the transition flow would be interesting, but it would feel much farther away. The way the game is shot now gets you a zoomed in view of the offensive zones.

One of those interesting tactics in negotiating contracts:

Meier signed for four years and a $6-million AAV, he’s still an RFA for one more year after his deal, although his final year salary is $10 million which gives him a very nice qualifying offer position.

Sometimes people get caught up in just the AAV without looking at the structure of the deal, but that's some good agenting right there.

https://theathletic.com/1179302/2019/09 ... adio-hire/

The Coyotes, who recently announced their games will be broadcast on Fox Sports 910, are upset that the station and its parent company, iHeartRadio, hired Dan Sileo, whose show will debut Tuesday from 4-7 p.m.

Sileo was fired three times by Florida radio stations in a 20-month span from 2012-13 for racist and/or sexist comments on air or on his personal Twitter account. He referred to three black NFL players as monkeys, said of Fox broadcaster Erin Andrews, “bake me a cake,” and “love Erin either naked or in a porn … not at a sports desk,” and made a joke in which he said, “Hey, one thing I’m very proud of, I saved every nickel I had. That must be the half-Hebrew in me.”

A source said the Coyotes will not allow any of their players or coaches to appear on Sileo’s show for the foreseeable future.

To me, Doc just brings back great memories.

Like of the Stars getting scored on by Arnott in game 6 of the Stanley Cup finals.

That's an interesting memory to have of him considering it was Gary Thorne who called the goal on ABC's broadcast of that game.

Frugs paid Doc to do a private broadcast of that game in his living room.

The Leafs really want to pay Ceci half a million a year more than Gardiner, huh? That seems like an odd stance to take.
