Duchene is an above average player but not a game breaker. I dunno.

I think he’s extremely good, but you’re not a truly terrifying team without a top notch scoring defense.

Bobrovsky's deal is 7 years, $10m per. According to my two resident goalies, Florida is going to really regret the last 3 or so years of that deal.

I wonder if Montreal front-loaded the offer in terms of cash since they are probably in a better position to do that than Carolina?

Edit: Now that I actually read the posted tweets, I see it includes the maximum signing bonus allowable. So, yeah.

Yup. It's gonna be matched. He's gonna get paid. And Canes fans are going to hate the Habs. Delicious. I love it.

Kind of an interesting choice of target. Aho's a really good player, no doubt. But Carolina has tons of cap room, so that shouldn't be an obstacle to the contract. Wonder if Aho was getting low-balled by the Hurricane in the RFA negotiations and is using this to get the numbers they want.

I think the Habs are testing the new Canes owner's commitment to shell out a bunch of cash up front.

He's signed it.

Officially, the Hurricanes have one week to match the offer sheet. I suspect they will do so much sooner than that. Assuming I’m correct, what is the fall-out? Will other GMs start looking side-eyed at Marc Bergevin for actually making an offer sheet? Will there be a barn fight? Or, is this simply a tool that will be used for leverage against rivals now? Perhaps Bergevin has broken the seal on this ‘forbidden’ move.

Just as pertinent: what does this do to Aho’s relationship with Carolina? Because he had to sign the offer sheet – the Habs couldn’t just deliver it to him like a court subpoena. So now the Canes know that Aho was willing to leave his team. Does that strain the relationship at all?

Also, Montreal definitely structured that deal in a way designed to take advantage of their Scrooge McDuck-esque piles of cash.

https://www.tsn.ca/montreal-canadiens-tender-offer-sheet-to-restricted-free-agent-forward-sebastian-aho-1.1331400

TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun reports the first-year signing bonus on the deal is $11.3 million with $700,000 in salary and the second year carries a $9.87 million signing bonus with $700,000 in salary

That's what I figured. So if Dundon decides to be a cheap-ass and not pay Aho in that structure, how much of the goodwill the Hurricanes earned this season is washed away? He's got to match.

I guess it depends on how good you think Montreal will be and if the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round picks will net you a better player than Aho (spoiler - probably not). If you think Montreal will suck, though, then Alexis Lafrenière is coming up in the draft.

I read Carolina intends to match.

Also, a funny aside. Earlier today on the TSN signing tracker, Mats Zuccarello was listed as going to the Stars. So when I checked in, I saw, Perry, Pavelski and Zuccarello as Stars. I figured it was wrong, but still, it was a bit of a shock. They changed it to MIN shortly after.

Now, Carolina needs to wait until the last day to match. Better to leave Montreal’s draft picks and cap space tied up in this offer. That way by the time Carolina matches any possible plan B for Montreal is off the market.
