Of all the stuff the NHL has done, the cap recapture penalties may be the biggest bunch of bullshit.

Nah, I like it. GMs should have to suffer SOME consequences for these idiotic contracts. You shouldn’t get off scot free just because another GM is even dumber than you and willing to take the contract off your hands.

But they are punishing teams for contracts that were perfectly legal under the then-current CBA, and that the NHL approved.

Looks like Vancouver has the room to absorb that hit, but still funny.

Was looking at CapFriendly. Colorado has $38 million of cap space. But they also literally have 5 forwards under contract. Imagine they will be a big player in free agency, but they also have a few of their own RFAs to take care. Will be interesting to see where they end up.

Probably, which is pretty amazing for someone who has scored 20, 29 and 31 goals over the last three years. I know he is talented and that's the market, but wow. May get a bit less on a bridge deal or something.

With the cap not going up much and the expansion draft protection issues, it will be an especially interesting off season.

It makes more sense to pay him for future performance than to overpay him at 30 for past performance that he won’t ever achieve again.

*Dang ol'*, this seems like a lot of effort for a 5th-round pick. Nill would have just given them a 1st with stupid conditions:

https://theathletic.com/1050405/2019/06/27/lebrun-notebook-matt-duchene-and-other-ufas-making-the-rounds-rfa-updates-and-more/

A trade that should have been completed around 6 or 7 p.m. ET ended up needing two calls with the league and didn’t wrap up until around 12:10 a.m. ET. Why? Because of the complicated layers attached to the conditional 2021 fifth-round pick.

The conditions: If Haula is on the Hurricanes roster past next season, so therefore if he re-signs, Vegas gets the pick. Ok, so far so good.

Vegas also gets the pick if Carolina trades him next season for either a player(s), or multiple picks, or a pick in Rounds 1-5. However, if he’s traded for a lower pick than Round 5, then there’s no fifth-rounder for Vegas and of course, if Haula doesn’t re-sign with Carolina next summer and walks into free agency, then there’s no pick either.

But where it got muddier and required more dialogue with Central Registry, is what happens, for example, if Haula gets dealt for a conditional pick himself next season before the deadline. Like a sixth-round pick which could become a fourth-round pick depending on the new team’s playoff run. So more language had to be established in the trade call(s). Oh by the way, if you’re still reading this far and haven’t banged your head off your office desk from falling asleep, the answer to the example above if that the higher pick in a conditional situation would determine the final tally on whether Vegas gets its fifth-round pick. So if that conditional sixth Carolina got for Haula next season becomes a fourth, Vegas gets the fifth. And there were more permutations put into this trade by the way.

McPhee has never been a very successful GM. Without the expansion draft to buoy them any longer, they’ll quickly slide into mediocrity.

Eh, he’s won a couple cups already, this will be fun for him. Tocchet used to be an asst. with Pit, so there’s a connection,
