I'm hesitating to jump on the "hire Laviolette for next season" bandwagon.

Laviolette has a darn impressive coaching resume. If you apply the Lidstrom discount to the early part of Babcock's record, there's no question Laviolette is a better coach.

He does actually. Although Nashville clearly wasn't working out.

And the NHL is a league where even great coaches burn out. His run with Nashville was a long one. He didn't win a Cup there, but he's taken three teams to the Cup finals.

I guess this means DeBoer isn't interested in coaching right now, or at least not in Nashville.

I'd be absolutely on board with Laviolette here.

I like Bowness as a person, but I don't think his heart is into being coach and he's even said so. So we've got to be looking.

Yeah, I agree. Even if you said Bowness is coaching until the end of the year, who effing cares? It would be the best thing for the team given the circumstances.

I'm fairly sure it has been stated that Bowness is coaching until the end of the year. And given the circumstances that moved him to head coach, he would not be so forthright about wanting that job.

It is what it is until it isn't. But I don't see another head coach until at least next season, and even then, another head coach? It's a bit much after 4 in 4 seasons. So if Bowness does well, and he wants to stay in the position it's probably his.

I don't like Bowness as a head coach, but he's the coach for the rest of the year. Shapiro pointed it out - Daddy T-Gags isn't going to let Nill commit millions to a new coach with Nill on the playoff hot seat.

I see your point. If Nill might not be the new GM, he probably shouldn't be picking a new coach.

Yeah but when a coach like Laviolette on the market, you have to wonder if that over-rides the Nill hot seat issue. I'd jump at Laviolette if I was Gaglardi.

I'd be down with Laviolette. He's done a lot without very much in the way of offensive superstars.

I think this gets to a bigger organizational problem right now. Monty getting fired early in the season makes the Nill holding patter a real problem. I get it that Gaglardi would normally wait to see how the season plays out before deciding what to do with Nill, which would also lead to a new GM coming in and deciding what to do with Monty.

But that all changed. They have a coaching problem now. It wasn't the fault of Gaglardi or Nill, but there is a problem to be addressed today. If there are head coaching candidates they like, holding off interviewing and hiring all because of the Nill uncertainty is a mistake.
I think if Gaglardi is already that uncertain about Nill, then fire him now and start the process of getting a new GM and new full time coach. What's he waiting for?

What would the team have to do for Gaglardi to keep Nill around? Do they have to get to the Conference Finals? If the bar is that high, then it means he's already 98% fired. Why wait? Gaglardi is essentially putting this whole season at risk all because he hasn't made up his mind on Nill.

I think it's weird to base the decision on that anyway. So much luck, timing and circumstance go into making it that far anyway.

So the Blues definitely outplayed the Stars in game 7, but supposing that OT wraparound by Benn that went 3/4 over the line went the whole way over the line? Did Nill suddenly do a good job? I think you gotta just look at the overall decisions and team he's built.

I would hope his waiting is not predicated on some particular result and just to get a larger picture of things and gather more data.

I'm pretty sure people in the front office have already engaged talks and discussions with potential head coaches even if it's for the next season, regardless to Nill's situation. There are many cases where GMs are replaced without touching at the coaching staff.

It's hard to say what are the conditions for Nill to keep his job (anyway, do you really feel right now that Nill's job is in jeopardy ?). But if the Stars make it to the second round, I think that's the green light.

I doubt Laviolette wants to immediately jump right back into it. Why not let the Predators finance a break and then evaluate opportunities in the off-season?

Of course, if he did want back in (and this is weird to say) - Dallas is a good team. It's not often a team that's likely to make the playoffs and that can do well is in need of a head coach. He wouldn't be taking over a dumpster fire of a team.

I think it's a lot less in jeopardy than the message board would like to think.

He handled things the RIGHT WAY with Monty. That buys him at least another 7-10 years.

All I know is about a year ago the owner made it clear about how upset he was at the state of the team.

Nill is well respected. And he has done a pretty good job at GMing. His big glaring weakness is his poor high round draft picks. (And in today’s NHL, drafting is paramount.) TGags has a lot to weigh in his decision, even if he is frustrated with the state of the team.

Sorry, but Nill was unable to stop Benn's skills from declining. Big time failure.

Maybe Benn will ericstaalize himself and score 45 goals next season, who knows.

I'm not sure Benn is going to score 45 more goals before he retires.
