Yep. Finally!

Just to let you know, this game provides a perfect picture of what Dallas Stars hockey games are almost always like.

I had a chance to go to the Leafs/Red Wings game at the Big House but declined because it seems like the seats are so far away that it's hard to actually see the game from the stands.

It's not a good view. You were smart to skip that one because it was so so cold. Colder than Corey Perry's heart.

Whatever the temperature is for the city, subtract 15 degrees from that and that will be the temperature inside the cotton bowl in the winter. Inverse is true for the summer.

All I saw was pretty much unbridled dominance from start to finish. Even when they went down 0-2 it didn't seem all that bad, really.

I'm sure he was cheering the Stars on more than all of the fans combined to try and undo his mistake.

Outside of Perry being Perry and the awful anthem singer, this game was perfect.

The more I look at Bowness's jacket, the more I love it. Should've been there, wait at him at the exit and racket his jacket because I don't think those are on sale for simple fans and proletarian population.

I saw a couple of those jackets in the stands. They're very sharp.

Now add in him holding one of those hobo sticks with his belongings tied up in a handkerchief.

If you're curious why NBC is so eager to include the same five or six teams in every Winter Classic, it's because those are the only teams American viewers tune in to see.

Check out the history of the Winter Classic ratings though.

They've very steadily gone downhill. A couple of blurps up when the big 6 teams play, but nevertheless. The trends is very steadily downward throughout its history.

Last year's Bruins/Blackhawks was the first time they'd gone up in like 4 or 5 years but even that was half the number that used to watch the Winter Classic.

It's because they play too many outdoor games, and because hockey is very regional.

That said, it's still going to be one of the highest-rated games ever. And all the national coverage of the game that I saw was exceedingly positive. It's just never going to be a ratings juggernaut.

Actually, if you look at the ratings numbers, they were pretty high UNTIL the league decided to ram the Blackhawks down our throats every other time.

It's a game of no special stakes that always features lower than usual quality of hockey, so the ratings are still impressive to me.

But the trend has not been great. They're trying to establish this as a New Year's tradition, but it's not exactly taking. This might be something where the novelty isn't enough for every single year in the long run.

The other problem is, the day of the year with the highest hangover rating (and therefore not able to tune in) is on January 1st.

I don't know the cost to put it on. Maybe the ticket and merch sales works to make it a winner. If so, I bet it stays. The danger comes from NBC deciding they'd rather run a dog show or some other thing because they are tired of losing in the ratings by a lot to the NBA and bowl games.
