That goal was pretty awesome. I didn't know what happened until the replay.

Also special thanks to the bottom half of the Western conference for being so bad that only 91points will clinch a playoff berth.

Here are the points of teams in the 8th spot over the last 10 years, except for the lockout shortened one.
Average is 94. Rarely does 91 points get in.

Code: Select all

West  East
95     97
94     95
88     96
99     98
91     93
95     92
97     93
95     88
91     93

I’m going reverse my opinion and agree with mr frugal. The final point total is likely higher than the point total necessary to clinch the last wildcard spot, since rarely do the 9th place teams finish exactly 1 point lower than the 8th place teams.

I still think the Western conference Is still pretty bad, given that we are likely to clinch a spot with only 89 points.

According to some website google presented to me, the probabality of making the playoffs now is 99.8%. Let's not uncork the champagne yet.

It's actually 100% any time Val suits up for more than 10 games. I don't know what you guys were worried about.

Even more important than the playoffs: we're now, finally, beating the Islanders by one goal for the Jennings trophy.

Yes. More important than the playoffs is playing the most defensive minded hockey imaginable.

Also the only time the Stars have won a playoff series in the past decade was when Nichushkin was scratched in the playoffs.

The funny part is the Jennings truly is a more rare and special accomplishment than just making a playoff spot, but if you can get it without making the playoffs than it completely undermines the value of said accomplishment.

So you're saying it's not impressive for McDavid to basically win the Hart every year?

I hope that shitstorm of a franchise doesn't waste McDavid's prime years. If it looks like they are going to, he should definitely leave.

Players like McDavid would really benefit from an opt-out clause in contracts.

Well, he signed on with them for like 8 more years, which proves that hockey sense and common sense aren't the same thing.

We should think about hiring Edmonton’s AHL coaches since they did such a good job of developing him.
