What happens to Nichushkin this summer? I wonder if he indeed will finish with zero goals.

Nichushkin would probably have 100 goals if it weren’t for Comeau constantly getting in his way.

Almost (if not over, by now) 1,000 different NHL players have scored a goal in between the last time Nichushkin scored an NHL goal and now.

They have to buy him out. They have him, Comeau, and Cogliano under contract going into next year. Hell, Comeau and Cogliano's contracts go two more seasons. Ugh.

The point is that's three guys who all do the exact same job: checking line PKer who provides no offense for around $3 million a season. Three guys who all do the job this team only needs one of. At least one of them has to go, but none of them have any trade value. So, which one do you buy out this summer?

The buyout math says Nichushkin has to be the one to go. Even if you think Nichushkin is twice the player those other two are, the math tells you to buy him out and use the cap savings and roster spot elsewhere.

* Buying out Cogliano would cost the Stars a cap hit of $1 million for the next four seasons (total cap savings of $2.2M and a total cap hit of $4.3M).

* Buying out Comeau would cost the Stars cap hits over the next four seasons of $566k, $1.2M, $766k, and $766k (total cap savings of $1.5M and a total cap hit of $3.2M).

* Buying out Nichushkin would cost the Stars cap hits over the next two seasons of $700k and $450k (for a total cap savings of $1.8M and a total cap hit of $1.15M).

Buying out Cogliano or Comeau creates four years of cap hits where the cap savings is less than the cap hit from the buyout.
Because he’s younger, buying out Nichushkin results in greater cap savings than cap hit and only a two year penalty.

Buying out Nichushkin is the smart move.

Don’t forget Hanzal and Oleksiak.

Buying out Hanzal: two year cap hits of $2 million and $1.3 million. The cap savings is $1.3 million vs a total cap hit of $3.4 million.

Buying out Oleksiak: four year cap hits of $918k, $381k, $743k, and $743k. The cap savings is $1.5 million vs a total cap hit of $2.8 million.

Oleksiak isn't a good candidate yet because he's over 26, which makes the cost of a buyout twice as expensive as buying out someone under 26. With Hanzal, my guess is they don't do anything and let LTIR take him off the books next season.

They can't buy out Hanzal if he is injured. Hopefully he hangs 'em up. But even if he doesn't, and why would he give up his guaranteed money, his salary won't count against the cap. I'm thinking we can trade Oleksiak, but he can be a healthy scratch for that cap hit.

Next season Spezza is gone. We'll rid Ritchie and hopefully Val, some way. Janmark is probably out and that will be that. Then we can add at least one UFA, maybe Zuccarello, and one kid or two. If another kid pushes his way, yay, we can make room.

Yeah, he could be way further ahead in the Jennings race if he would cut out all those silly short side goals.

If this is what the Stars will look like in the post-Nishushkin Era, then No Thanks.

Heiskanen twice deferring to Seguin instead of shooting was horrible. Take the shots. Neither pass to a Seguin was good, and the second one ended up causing the empty net.

Reading the game stories you’d think it was a good game that just turned on two mistakes, but I thought the Avs took it to the Stars. Both goals were an eventuality because they had the puck so much. Can’t play just one period and expect to win. And this was most definitely not a “playoff” game.

The line change by Ritchie and Spezza was horrific. Saw they were both basically benched after it.

I saw the replay in Shapiro’s Twitter feed. Spezza’s change was more forgivable since he was close to the bench. Ritchie looked like he just clocked out for the day. Who cares that the opponent has the puck right at your own blue line? Not Ritchie. Time to loaf back to the bench.

I guess it was a lazy change by Ritchie, but it's pretty odd how Stars internet has decided to blame Ritchie for that goal against. Even if he busts ass to the bench, the goal gets scored. The RWer coming onto the ice to take his place isn't going to be the guy to change the outcome.

I think it's more that he shouldn't have changed and should have challenged for that puck that was 5 feet away from him. Then they might not enter the zone at all.

But they all went, including one of the two defenders. Gotta think Monty called them to the bench for a matchup change.
