This is why Nichushkin wasn’t bought out. Nill needs bodies. Get ready for a summer of “we like Val’s work-oots and expect a big jump from him this year.”

Well if we don’t sign Zuccarello then we keep next year’s 1st round pick, which could be anything. Even another Zuccarello.

I don’t think Nill understands how much of his money I’m willing to spend on this guy.

For just four million more and three more 1sts, we could get this guy:

With the way the Stars draft, there's a good chance Marner puts up more points over the length of his contract with the Stars than all of the draft picks combined would over the course of their careers.

Is next year’s first round pick in limbo until Zuccarello signs somewhere else? Or does it become officially ours again when free agency starts.

Do we still have to give the pick if we sign him after July 1st is my question. Is there a time limit on the pick?

We should give some team a second round pick to sign him and then trade him to us.

I never thought he would re-sign with Dallas. He was just being polite to the media.

I hear that as: "The Stars are not willing to shell out what other teams are offering."

After Hayes signed that (unearned) monster contract, Zucc's value went up by at least 2 mil/year. Which, realistically, he's just not worth at his age and overall production.

I'm sure he wants to play here, but to take a discount to do so? On his last big payday? *f-bomb* that.

Yeah, I don’t blame him, especially given his contract history.

I hope when he comes back here he doesn't think our "BOOOOOOO"s are actually "ZUUUUUUC"s, because that would be an inaccurate thing to think.

Welp. I’d rather keep Zuccarello AND add some more help (because I really don’t think that it should be either or), but this is one positive way to look at it I guess:

HFboards wrote:I love Zucc, but if we can get Nyquist (or someone else) cheaper AND another defenseman I think I would rather that.

Nyquist + Top 4 D + 2020 1st > Zucc

And if we keep our 1st, I guess I’ll attend the 2020 draft in MTL. Whatever.

I hope we don't stoop to San Jose's or Nashville's level with this.

I have no resentment if he goes somewhere else. Dude should get his money and/or play for which ever team he wants. You don't get many shots at that.

I won't resent him. I'll just hate him unjustifiably because it's more fun.

I doubt I would boo though as the effort feels extraordinary.

Nill: okay, now's time to talk 'bout contract. What are your expectations ?

Zucc: Long-term. At least 5 years.

Nill: Are you nuts ?!?! No way. You're soft, your career is already on the decline side. We won't take that risk, sorry buddy.

Zucc: No prob', there's a lot of teams interested anyway.

Nill: morons... Stanley cup contenders ?

Zucc: It's not important...

Fenton: Sorry guys to jump in but I heard your your conversation. (To Nill:) Yeah sorry, my son put a mic hidden behind your sleeve. Don't be mad, later on you will thank me for that. (To Zucc:) So Zucc, what are your expectations again ?

Zucc: Long-term deal.

Fenton: How many years ?

Zucc: 5 years at least.

Fenton: Ok, you got it. $6m per year ?

Zucc: Eeewww... Yeah, sure !

Fenton: Deal. Wanna add a NTC in top of that ?

Zucc: Yeah, great ! (To Nill:) What does this guy smoke? It wanna try that.

Fenton: Perfect. Sign here. Now welcome to the retirement home. Golf course is here on the right, the spa is over there, meals are at 8am, 1pm and 6pm. Meet our first residents, Parisé is the one with the huge wooden reinforcement in the back, Suter is the slow guy there walking heavily with his stick. Oh and please, for the presser could use just say the usual BS like "The State of Hockey, tradition, great fans, always dreamed to play there since the Gaborik years, unique opportunity, blah blah blah", Thanks !

I don't really think the Zuccarello deal was that terrible. Yes, it's too long by a year, but if Minn didn't offer that contract, other teams would have offered similar. Also it was Zuccarello's best opportunity of garnering serious cash. His max salary to date has been 4.5 million. He was gonna get his due this contract. Prior to last season he has been quite durable and given that he is a smaller, less physical player he should age better than a more physical player. I am a little surprised though that he ended up with the Wild given they don't seem like cup contenders or even close. I won't be looking forward to his lighting up the Stars many times a year.

He has a NMC during the expansion draft, which is a killer for me. So they have to use a protection slot on a 33 year old guy?

It was a pretty bad contract for the Wild, but a great one for Zucc. I'd call that a win-win.
