Stars trade Oleksiak. Correction... trade for Oleksiak.
Oleksiak is going to become the new Benoit Hogue, isn't he? And the Penguins pretty much nullified the original trade.
With Methot out, I guess the Stars decided they needed another body. Tells you what they think of the guys rotating as scratches to go this route.

Oleksiak has made it to the second round of the playoffs, which is more than most of the Stars' skaters.

Nill's reasoning is amazing. Not "he's really good at hockey." Just "He's big."

So Pittsburg, a team also trying to solidify a playoff push, wanted to get rid of Oleksiak. So they want to get better by subtracting Oleksiak yet this is somehow supposed to make the Stars better?
Seriously, this is the best/worst trade this team has ever made.

Oh and by the way, the Penguins return him to us with a lovely new three year contract at $2.2/year.

So the Penguins wanted a reset button on their terrible signing. Nill to the rescue!
My god, he's just not good at his job.

And it's not like he ever really used his size as a physical presence. Maybe he did that more with the Penguins, but that wasn't his strong suit here (not sure what his strong suit was).
But hey, he's signed for two more years after this season!
Not that there was much doubt, but Honka has to be moved now, right?

Subtraction by addition.

I also have to congratulate Jim Nill on being able to post here for years without detection. I know who you are, ToddM. Making trades just to troll us is no way to GM.

Looking at the Penguins cap situation for next year shows they will have 14 players on the roster, with a total of about $6m cap space (assuming no rise in the cap). That is after taking off Oleksiak's $2.2m cap hit. Not a whole lot of money to go around.

With the majority of Methot's hefty contract on LTIR, there's a decent amount of padding now. The Stars can probably go back to carrying 8 d on NHL contracts now, so we could likely see Oleksiak, Honka, and Carrick on a rotation for the #6 spot.

I honestly think Oleksiak is far better than Carrick, maybe on par or better than Fedun, and the jury is out on his former AHL D partner, Hoonky. `

Can someone photoshop Jim Nill into this?

I just mean from a "He has no future here - might as well see how many pucks we can get in that bag in exchange for him" standpoint

I wonder how Oleksiak feels about this, given that he and Nemeth were pretty brutal in their comments about the organization and its treatment of them.

What comments did they make? I didn't catch that.
This is seriously a head scratcher.
I told everyone that Nill would start making panic trades to save his job. This has panic written all over it.

When Johns goes on LTIR, can we trade to get back Kevin Connauton?

He’s the 10th best scorer on the team already.

Let's revisit this sentiment when you realize Nill just acquired Oleksiak to take Honka's job.

If Nill can somehow find a way to sign Fistric out of retirement, Todd may not make it through the week.

In an ideal world of poets and philosophers, Oleksiak would replace Polak, who is unquestionably one of the worst d-men in the entire NHL, and keep Honka, who is basically the most high reward/high-risk player we've got (i.e., insanely talented and insanely prone to turnovers).

But yeah, this probably seals the deal on Honka being traded to Pittsburgh for a conditional 6th.

Re: Stars trade Oleksiak. Correction... trade for Oleksiak.
It's pretty simple. Lower right = really good. Upper left = really bad.
Honka is in a pretty unique spot in that he is simultaneously one of the best and one of the worst d-men at exiting the zone. In other words, if you love im or hate him, you'll find plenty to support your theory. And you'd be simultaneously right and wrong.
Oleksiak is not very exciting. Not as boring as Methot, but not as Bad Exciting as Polak, either. Serviceable.
