Even though his job should be on the line, I have a crazy feeling that Nill stands pat and doesn't make any moves.

I actually like the way the Stars are playing right now. They are trying to win the right way. Just not quite enough depth.

So, I actually am more interested in a trade than I usually am at this time of the year. Hope we add a piece, but one that’s good for the longer term as well. I don’t think Nill should stand pat.

I bet almost no trades are made at all. There's only like 3 sellers and 27 buyers. And those 3 sellers have jack *poo poo* for interesting players.

idk, there seem to be quite a lot of players that are UFAs that are tradable, even for rentals. Eventually the dominoes will drop, but especially in the West not many teams are totally out. And once the big names are either traded or re-signed the market prices will be set. It is pretty quiet out there, though.

As far as the Stars, can't call it. I could see Nill pulling off a big trade or just a little something to add scoring.

Just looked at the standings, and there are about 8 definite sellers, and one more (Philly) that should be but is hot right now so they might get enough false hope to try and become a buyer. So 9 sellers and 21 buyers.

Though some of those Wild Card teams might get cold over the next two weeks and drop out.

Funny how the teams that seem to be pretty active in the trade market are also the teams that seem to consistently do well. It's not like a solution to the scoring issue is coming from within.

Also worth noting is that the Stars have a reputation problem with respect to management now that Lites went and shined a floodlight on everything.

DBD did an article on Simmonds. Their take? He scores at the rate Spezza does, but with more ice time and 1st unit PP time and he sucks in the playoffs and would cost too much. Basically we'd be trading valuable assets for 2-3 power play goals.

https://www.defendingbigd.com/2019/2/13 ... ef-beefity

Other than that, tho, he would've been a good pickup 3-5 years ago.

His points come more in the form of goals than assists, but either way, that level of production is still an upgrade over ... like ten forwards on this roster.

It would depends on the cost to me. I think too many GM's will pee themselves over Simmons and drive the cost way too high.

I like the way slaps has taken a stand against the ‘d’ in his last name. I too feel that it has always been out of place. Someone with such blatant disregard for propriety should not be on our team.

We’ll find out after we acquire him that it’s actually spelled Simmonnds

If that's all it takes, this should have happened weeks ago.

We should start stocking up on “wait, that guy’s still in the league?” like Nyquist if we truly want to complete our transition into the western conference Florida Panthers.

We could just hang on to the "that's a hockey player?" guys we have now.

There you go again, ahead of the curve.

I could be wrong, but I don't think we've made a meaningful trade deadline acquisition since Brad Richards, right? Like ten years ago?

It’s been a few years since the Stars made a big acquisition at the trade deadline. If you don’t count Kris Russell—and, I mean, you probably shouldn’t—it’s been a few more.

The Stars stood pat last year, choosing not to risk their young assets like Jason Dickinson and a first-round draft pick (particularly with the draft in Dallas last summer) on a rental. They ended up missing the playoffs by a couple points, and I leave it to you to decide whether that ended up being the right choice or not.

Two years ago, the Stars were quite bad, and therefore sellers. Pending UFAs Patrick Sharp and Ales Hemsky unfortunately got hurt, preventing their sales, but Jim Nill did manage to sell off Jordie Benn, Patrick Eaves, Lauri Korpikoski and Johnny Oduya.

The year before that saw a Dan Hamhuis trade fizzle into the Russell acquisition, and 2014-15 saw Jhonas Enroth fail to save the day the year after another goalie deal at the 2013-14 deadline in the form of Tim Thomas.

It could be argued that the team hasn’t really traded for a top-half-of-the-lineup player at the deadline since the Brad Richards deal in 2008, which worked out pretty nicely.

From what I can tell it turned into Jake Oettinger, Dillon Heatherington, and a year’s worth of Pateryn.

Zuccarello has also been identified as a trade target for us.
