11/06 @ Columbus - PANAROUT

Postby Knives Out » Tue Nov 06, 2018 3:50 pm

Oh man. The second of a back-to-back on the road? Even the Kings would beat us.
The good news though is that this 6-game road trip is the longest we'll have all season and it's donezo after tonight.

Bishop with the probable start.

If we can eek out a point tonight, I will consider this trip a non-disaster.

I’m watching election results. When I was watching the game, the Stars were not doing anything.

I have it on a side screen. Jamie showed up and scored a meaningless goal once we were already down 3-0.

Leeched off of Heiskanen's pass.

I'm not even mad, boys. Just go home, rest up, and hopefully Radulov is good to go again.

Just FYI, Oleksiak would be the 7th leading scorer on the Stars. More goals than Seguin or Spezza.

Weird, some dude on the internet said he was a draft bust.

He was a draft bust.

He’s now finally playing well on his fourth pro contract seven years after he was drafted. That’s not a draft success story. No GM brags about finding a guy who needed the better part of a decade and a trade to figure out how to play.

He's rounding out into the player he was drafted to be. How is that a bust? If anything, all it shows is that the team that drafted him didn't develop him the way it should have, and another team reaped the benefits.

Not to mention that extremely underwhelming rest of the first round picks in his draft class:

https://www.hockey-reference.com/draft/ ... entry.html

Klefbom and Rackell were clearly better picks in retrospect, tho not tremendously so (let's ignore Gibson and Kucherov, who were picked deep in the 2nd round). Oleksiak gets *poo poo* on a lot, but really, he seems to be slowly developing into a guy who could justify being the 14th overall pick. It's just hard to see that when his chickenshit coaches only give him 7 minutes a night once every eight games.

I was mostly pointing out what we all know... the Stars suck at player development in terms of getting an actual impactful player out of it. The two they have (Benn and Klingberg) I'd say were more lucky than due to development.

Really, just watch the team. There's not much creativity out there.

He did not deliver what the Stars wanted when he was drafted. That is a bust. You don't draft a defenseman #14 overall with a hope that he might become a reliable #6 guy seven years later at the tail end of his restricted free agency. You draft guys in the first round with the hopes they are contributing to your team by age 21 so you can get six or more years of production before they hit UFA.

This would be like being told to expect the most recent first round pick Ty Dellandrea to round out into a decent third line player in 2024 or 2025. If that's what your'e being sold now, do you congratulate Nill on the pick?

That Oleksiak was able to salvage his career is nice to see. Good for him. He was offered a second chance and has made it work. But even if he was doing the same thing here, he'd be viewed as a bust. He's playing #6 minutes with no PK or PP time. His best equivalent here is Conner Carrick. Carrick was drafted a season after Oleksiak and is playing a nearly identical role ice time wise, yet I don't think anyone cheering for the Capitals is admonishing their team for giving up too early on Carrick. The reason probably is because Carrick was a 5th rounder, so no one cares if a 5th rounder is sent off to bounce around the league trying to find a role to cling to.

What Nill really seems to struggle with is committing to an evaluation of young players. Either decide they are good and play them, or decide they aren't what you thought they'd be, or you need on your roster, and sell high on them for a better trade. Instead they hang on to the players for well past when they have any real value, which results in the dump off trade looking bad when the player turns it around on the new team.

Spin it any way you want, but the fact is that Oleksiak is getting 17 minutes a night and outscoring every pens d-man not named Letang by a wide margin while primarily playing a shutdown role. How is that not worth a mid-level first round pick? Not to mention that he's really really tall.

I'm not spinning anything. He's playing #6 minutes behind five other guys and getting no PK or PP time. He's playing Carrick's role. That's not a big success for a first rounder.

I suspect that if he continues to outscore Maata, he'll start getting PP time soon.

I suspect, like Carrick's start to the season, Oleksiak had a four game hot streak and will return to earth.

And with Nichushkin on pace for a massive 16 point season and Faksa on pace for 27 points, the Hall of Fame is going to have to open a new wing for all of these first round picks of the Dallas Stars.

I'm still giving Faksa a pass on not scoring a lot. He provides a tangible contribution on the ice that goes beyond points. He's working his way into that Stu Barnes type of role, and he does it well.

The problem with other recent picks (like Dellandrea) is that he likely slots into that same role. Getting a solid, reliable third-line center who can slot up to the second line here and there with a first round pick is a good outcome every few years, but the truly good teams look to get elite production out of their first round picks. They have to in order to be competitive, and we don't have any truly top-end talent in the pipeline, especially center.

Nichushkin is a bust because, he's supposed to score, and if he isn't doing that, he's just taking up space.

Dellandrea is heating up lately, with 12 points in his last 7 games. While also acting in a Kopitar shut-down role. He really seems more suited to 2C, Faksa to 3C.

His team still hasn't won a single game, tho.

THE STREAK IS OVER!!! Flint finally gets their first win of the season. Dellandrea with two primary assists to bring his team out of an early 0-2 hole.
