And yes, Klingberg got several Norris votes two seasons ago when he led all defensemen in assists and finished second in defenseman scoring.

Also if they had an award for best leadership, it’s clear that Benn would get it.

They have that. Dustin Brown has won it.

I guess I should say young player that the Stars drafted and developed.

The top D pair last season were both players the Stars drafted and developed. Three of their projected top six forwards were drafted and developed by the Stars (and five of the top nine forwards). Development isn't really the problem. They're developing players just fine.

Klingberg has to be somewhat pissed that he's now being completely overlooked as everyone focuses on Heiskanen. Maybe that'll be motivation for him to play better, which would be nice. Not that he played poorly, I just mean to play even better than he did.

Well, maybe not on defense so much, but the Norris isn't about that anyway. They really need a version of the Selke for defense.

The problem is that a good chunk of the players they are starting with don't have high ceilings. You can only develop so much - there has to be innate talent to develop.

In addition to prospect talk, Shapiro noted that the whole team is in Frisco skating together before camp starts on Friday, but Johns was not among them.

Also, Shapiro said he was told the Stars were seeking a 3rd round pick for Honka this summer and couldn't find anyone willing to pay that much. Looks like my guess of him being worth a 4th rounder was either spot on or maybe even a little high.

The Stars should trade Honka plus a 3rd to Edmonton for Jesse Puljeweljarvis.

So, random fun fact of the day. If the Stars did not have one of Comeau or Cogliano to contend with, and did not have one of Oleksiak or Polak, they could have been in contention for Gardiner. Gardiner would instantly be a top-4 defenseman for the Stars, and would have been a great partner for Lindell or Heiskanen (if you keep Heiskanen with Klingberg).

And the first offer for Gardiner came from the Canadiens in early July. Gardiner opted to wait before choosing to go with the Canes.

I'm wondering how much is asking Markov for a 1-year contract...

If the Stars didn’t have Seguin and Benn and Pavelski, they’d be a top contender for McDavid.

Neither Cogliano nor Oleksiak provide anything worth near what they are paid, yet Nill specifically went out to acquire them.

Shocker, he doesn't want to play for a team that will *poo poo* on him every chance because his name isn't Jean-Luc Pierre Gardinere.

I thought Cogliano was great last year. Not a ton of offense, but still a huge upgrade over Shore.

He was okay for a bit then pretty invisible really. So basically the same as Shore.

He was fine, I guess. But you can get "fine" for league minimum.

Moving forward, I say we should always use Devin Shore as a base comparison for all Stars players.

Cogliano was way better than Shore defensively. Cogliano-Faksa-Comeau was the best shutdown line we’ve had in years.

Cogliano was also a good PKer in the playoffs. But he was very redundant with the other depth forwards with no offense in their game.

Cogliano was way better than Shore. Of course less salary is beneficial to the overall team health. But you make the trades that are available when you need them. Cogliano helped our team into the playoffs. Oleksiak was too bad, he’s way over paid for an insurance marker, but such is life. Hopefully Nill can unload him soon.

If this is all true, there will be about ten things to be very disappointed about. Sorry, I don't know how to only post the Stars list.

Those seem like incredibly optimistic projections for Benn, Hintz, Faksa, and Oleksiak.

At least there isn't a forward with a goal projection of zero.

Didn’t he kind of just average previous seasons together? Seems like not much analysis was really involved.

I'd knock those forwards stats down about 25%, and up the d-man stats by 10% or so, due to Monty's system.

Montreal is really full of itself. I just bought tickets for the February game in Montreal, and they offered me a "pre-game tour" package for only $195 per person.

Also, Canadian money is so cute. I was all set to get outraged over the prices until I realized that it was all in CAD and that's like Monopoly money.
