Another fun factor: the Stars don't have to protect Pavelski in the expansion draft. They can hang him and his big salary out there for Seattle to take, which they might to hit the floor.

I got a ranch in downtown Dallas/I buy diamonds by the ton/Chase cuties in my Cadillac/Drill oil wells just for fun/But when it comes to boots, I need a deal/That will fit me right, toe to heel/So I get my boots at Western Warehouse.

Everything about this deal seems like an absolute win.

Gurianov as the number one LW? Seriously?

I see the top 2 lines as basically interchangeable.

I also think Gurianov needs to be played on one of those top two lines because he seems to be a guy who is either contributing to scoring or is useless.

Also, I would pencil in Hintz on the 4th line, not the 2nd. People are charting his career path based on a few good playoff games, but the whole point of signing Pavelski was to have top 6 forwards for when guys like Hintz and Dickinson inevitably regress.

After like 10 games, it’ll be:

Janmark?-Seguin-Rads
Benn-Pavelski-Perry
Cogliano-Faksa-Comeau
Hintz-Dickinson-whoever

From Shapiro, potential lines:

Jamie Benn – Tyler Seguin – Alexander Radulov
Denis Gurianov – Roope Hintz – Joe Pavelski
Jason Dickinson – Radek Faksa – Corey Perry
Andrew Cogliano – Ty Dellandrea – Blake Comeau

Esa Lindell – John Klingberg
Miro Heiskanen – Stephen Johns
Andrej Sekara – Roman Polak

Ben Bishop
Anton Khudobin

Scratches: Mattias Janmark, Justin Dowling, Jamie Oleksiak

Injured reserve: Martin Hanzal

That actually looks like a balanced and competitive team.

So we only have to wrap up Dickinson and we're good.

And then Honka could sign his qualifying offer to force a trade.

And we’ll add Hanzal’s cap hit to available space right after the season opens, so that’s space for a trade later on if the team’s play warrants.

Putting the cart entirely before the horse here, but was looking at the players under contract for 20/21 and the money that comes off the books. Its around $14.3m between Hanzal, Janmark, Perry, Polak, Sekera and Khodobin. Some of that may be eaten up by Perry's bonuses which will likely (hopefully) be earned.

Faksa and Hintz will be RFAs and will earn raises. Maybe one of the young goalies shows he is ready to be the backup. But the Stars should be in a position to add a decent piece, along with filling out the roster. Not a tier 1 free agent, but something of value.

Signing a free agent next summer will make us feel much better about our hypothetical roster during the lockout.

Like Shapiro said, this is not the same as Avery. Perry's teammates love him and we all will too when he's being a douchebag in our interest instead of against it.

I liken it more to Claude Lemieux. Notorious a-hole who was way past his prime, and did literally nothing for the Stars other than suck serious ass. I don't think any Stars fans ever took a liking to him, despite his jersey. And why should they have? It was clearly a terrible signing from the moment it was inked. What were they trying to accomplish there?

Perry fits the same mold. This isn't like the Cowboys getting T.O., who was still in his prime and incredibly productive, despite what he did with the Star that one game. This is an old and busted piece of *poo poo* diver who is likely "done." I know the conventional wisdom on these 1 year deals is "no risk," but that's horseshit. Signing demonstrably bad players like Perry/Sekera/Polak to one year deals just means you're wasting yet another year of Bishop/Seguin/Benn/Etc's prime on shitty players that no one else would ever want. It's not "low-risk," it's taking guys who haven't even been replacement-level scrubs for years and "hoping" that they somehow "return to form."

Stars fans are smarter than ya'll give them credit for (usually). They're mad at their team right now because Nill is making dumb, short-term signings to save his job for one more season, not because Perry speared Benn in the nuts once. "Well if Perry sucks ass we'll just send 'em down to the AHL!" Bullshizz. We've seen what this coaching staff does with bottom-role players, and it's not pretty. 30 or 40 games of Corey Perry struggling to keep up on his shot-to-shit Achilles and knees is 30 or 40 games where Hintz and Pavelski have to cover for his age-beaten ass and see their own production drop. It's 30 or 40 games where Robertson and Dellandrea et all have to sit patiently on the sidelines wondering what the *f-bomb* is wrong with this team that they can't beat out a washout like Perry for a roster spot.

But hey! He might prove me wrong! I also might win big in Vegas by hitting on 17 in blackjack every time it comes up! Unlikely, but possible!

Lemieux was older when he came to the Stars (37, going on 38) so it's not quite the same. Perry is past his prime, but he could make a partial comeback similarly to Selanne after his stint in Colorado.

If Perry contributes significantly to the team's success, I will take a liking to him because he helped my team.

I don't see Nill's moves this offseason as dumb at all. They are low-risk, high-reward, short-term deals that don't really hamper the team long-term. And this is coming from someone who really wants Nill fired.

, Stars fans are mad because Perry is mean. Just go read their gripes. The fans saying they will cancel their season tickets aren't talking about his declining play. They're talking about his dirty play style and how rude he is.

And adding one cheap vet isn't keeping young guys from playing. Look at last season. Nill said they couldn't afford to call Gurianov up late in the season because his small bonuses would have pushed them over the cap. Well, if you want to blame someone for keeping Gurianov from playing, look to the other young Russian who got paid almost $3 million to take up space. They couldn't afford Gurianov because they were instead spending his cap space on a very bad gamble.

As much as I dislike Perry, and it’s still kinda weird to think he’s a Star, Lemieux and Avery were worse. I retain the rights to changing my mind later.

I get the signing. Perry could still be a very good player, but if he can’t keep up, he’s a scratch. If the youngsters out play him, he’s a scratch. I’m not even worried.
