Trades aside, the worst thing Nill did was sign a 32 year old Spezza to a four year 30 million dollar contract. Nothing overshadows this *poo poo* show.

I don’t think it was an awful decision at the time. We all knew the last year, maybe two, would be not good. But Spezza never relied on a physical game, so it wasn’t like his body was going to wear out from abuse. Generally, smart players who rely on hockey IQ and not physical force can play for a longer time. And he’s always been a point a game guy, since forever. I don’t think anyone could have foreseen just how far off a cliff he has gone. And Nill overpaid somewhat to keep it a short term.

It’s not an egregiously bad decision like locking up a power forward on the decline to eight years at $9.5MM a year AAV would be.

OK Val, now that you hold the record, it's really ok to score.

I think he should also have five additional games tacked on from the end of 15/16 where he also didn't score a goal or take a penalty.

Nichuskin is so invisible on the ice that even Todd has stopped defending him.

I'm just waiting for him to get traded to a real team so he can start scoring shitloads of goals.

Can you trade an NHL player to a beer league team?

Calling the Red Wings a beer league team is a little harsh.

Stars recalled Bow to be the backup for Saturday's game. No word on Bishop's injury yet.

Do you all think Dickinson will ever score another goal or will the December 3rd goal be the last one of his career?

He's one of those guys who sometimes has the "he looks pretty good" games while not actually having his efforts result in goals being scored.

You made me go update the goal scoring *poo poo* list:
Nichushkin - 0 goals in last 1,111 days (only 1 point in last 19 games)
Dickinson - 0 goals in last 31 games
Cogliano - 0 goals in last 18 games
Comeau - 0 goals in last 16 games
Ritchie - 0 goals in last 16 games
Spezza - 0 goals in last 10 games
Janmark - 1 goal in last 18 games
L'Esperance - 1 goal in last 13 games (only point)
Seguin - 1 goal in last 12 games

Guys with enough recent goals not to make the *poo poo* list:
Benn
Faksa
Hintz
Radulov

So Spezza was supposed to have a resurgence this year not being under Hitchcock since they didn't get along and all. Welp, he's projected to finish barely better in points and end up with about the same ice time.

Since he'll be a free agent, do you think any teams will actually offer him a contract? Or will he just retire?

I can’t imagine a lot of teams are lining up for a guy who’s about to turn 36 and struggles to score. He’s probably done.

FWIW, under Hitchcock’s oppressive and offensively stifling coaching, the Stars scored 2.82 goals per game last season. Right in the middle of the league.

Whereas under Monty’s modern and enlightened approach, the Stars are scoring 2.51 goals/game. 3rd worst in the league.

Due in no small part to the fact that Nill took a roster that lacked offensive punch, and somehow made it even less offensively inclined.

This team is way better defensively than they were under Hitch’s stifling defensive system.

The PP sucking has a lot to do with that.

Also, Monty is more Hitchian than Hitch.

Our PP is only .4% lower than last year.

Editing to add, PP opportunities are *way* down over last year.

Yeah, but scoring has exploded across the board. We're actively swimming against that wave.

And that's after replacing the three goals Dan Hamhuis scored in 80 games last season with 10 goals in 72 games from their only All-Star.

A little bit of math shows that we’re on pace to score 25 fewer goals than last year.
The reduction in PP opportunities would account for only 6 of them.

Has any team in the history of the league ever won the Jennings trophy and missed the playoffs in the same year?

Doubtful.

We're just two goals back of the Isles for the Jennings right now. We need someone to haul off and light those fuckers up.

Good read on how the Stars *f-bomb* over their young prospects by trading for bottom-feeding vets that they don't even need:
