It's important to remember these undrafted free agents almost never turn into anything.

I got a ranch in downtown Dallas/I buy diamonds by the ton/Chase cuties in my Cadillac/Drill oil wells just for fun/But when it comes to boots, I need a deal/That will fit me right, toe to heel/So I get my boots at Western Warehouse.

I'll bet he can score at least at the Nyetchuskin rate.

Speaking of Brunnstrom. He finished with 19 goals, 22 assists for 41 points in 104 NHL games. That's about 0.4 points per game.

Valeri Nichushkin has 23 goals, 48 points for 71 points in 204 NHL games. That's about 0.35 points per game.

Brunnstrom also had more hat tricks.

Just let that sink in for a minute...

ESPN mid-season grades. The one for the Stars is pretty accurate.

http://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/2587 ... -nhl-teams

Coach: B-

Look, drama and injuries aside, this team is in playoff position. That's a minor miracle considering the highest-paid players are underperforming (though not as badly as the team CEO made it out to be) and the fact that players are adjusting to a completely new scheme yet again. Jim Montgomery told the Dallas Morning News that he lost his way a bit in December, but he seems to have settled in since then.

GM: C-

The Stars whiffed on their big free-agent targets. The Valeri Nichushkin signing was a bust. There have been a few minor tweaks since then, but nothing too inspiring yet. Over the second half of the season, could Jim Nill be fighting for his job?

As Stars GM, Jim Nill has drafted 44 players. Those players have combined to score 18 goals in the NHL this season. Draft lottery Miro Heiskanen has 9 of them. Yes, 50% of goals scored by Nill's draft picks have come from one defenseman who fell in his lap thanks to ping pong balls bouncing the right way.

Setting aside how few of Nill's picks are even playing NHL games, I'll just list the guys who have played in the NHL this season and how many goals they've scored.

2013
Nichushkin - 0 goals, ∞ excuses
Dickinson - 5 goals
Elie - 0 goals
Nick Paul - 1 goal

2014
Honka - 0 goals, ∞ excuses

2015
Gurianov - 1 goal
Hintz - 2 goals

The worst GM in hockey, folks.

Oh look, Punxsutawney Nill saw his shadow. 8 more weeks before he makes changes to the roster.

From article on The Athletic:
Goal scoring is a priority and ideally down the middle for the Stars, but a source close to the team suggested that getting a true No. 2 center is likely an offseason task and a rental winger would be a priority at the deadline.

I'm fine with that. Chances are that Hintz is not quite ready to be a 2nd line center. Maybe if he got true 2nd line minutes he'd bust out, but it just doesn't seem super likely. He has played way better the last few games though where he's actually getting shots off and generating scoring chances.

I like Duchene, but not at $8MM a year for 8 years.

I'd also pass on Duchene. He's generally at best a 60 point guy and he's already 28. His numbers probably won't go up over those 8 years or whatever.

Speaking of which, the long term contracts are *fargin'* terrible. I wish they capped it at 5 years at most. In a few years it seems like we'll all just be stuck watching teams saddled with those contracts and no real free agent movement that actually impacts anything. We're already basically there anyway, but it's only getting worse the more and more players sign these.

Long-term contracts are fine. The owners need exercise some sort of restraint. But Matthews just signed a 5-year deal, which is shrewd. The cap will go up, his point total will go up, and then he can lock in the long-term deal at 25 or whatever for even more money.

And originally I wouldn't said he wasn't worth the money or term, but then we went out and signed Comeau for 3 years at almost the same yearly money, so that reason to not keep him was void.

So Roussel has the same goals (6) and assists (16) as Spezza with about the same ice time except Spezza has 8 assists from the PP and Roussel's is all even strength.

And to compare, Comeau has 6 goald and 4 assists.

Could we trade Nichuskin or Comeau for Roussel? Just getting him back would spark some energy and apparently some offense too.

Time for the annual "Bishop is injured" post. Hopefully Dobby holds down the fort and that Bishop's injury isn't serious.

It will be interesting to see if the yearly meltdown begins tomorrow. IR? Sounds like more than a tweak.

Heiskanen might be the first ever Dallas Stars Calder finalist. He has no chance of winning because Pettersson will run away with it and should be a damned Hart contender. I think the only other Stars rookie to ever even kind of be in the running was Klingberg.

Modano was a Calder finalist, wasn't he? And some guy you've never heard of actually won the Calder for the North Stars. His name escapes me though.

Obviously, I'm only talking about Dallas Stars. I don't care about the voting that happened for Minnesota fans.

31, and it was future Stars great (for four games in November of 1996) Sergei Makarov.

Wikipedia wrote:In the Soviet Union, Makarov played 11 championship seasons with CSKA Moscow (Red Army), winning the Soviet Player of the Year award (also known as Soviet MVP) three times, getting named to the Soviet League All-Star Team ten times, and leading the league in points nine times and goals three times. Together with Igor Larionov and Vladimir Krutov, they formed the KLM line, one of the most talented and feared lines ever to play hockey. He was awarded Order of the Red Banner of Labour (1984).

In 1989, Makarov was allowed by the Soviet Union to join the National Hockey League and the Calgary Flames. He won the Calder Memorial Trophy as rookie of the year at the age of 31 (as a result, the rules were changed and now only players under 26 qualify for the award – the Makarov Rule). At 25.9% his shooting percentage was the highest of all NHL players.

Monty is shuffling the forward lines. Looks like Nichushkin is in for Gurianov for the next game. Hintz is getting a promotion.
