Seems they were going to scratch Hintz for this next game, they're sending him down to get playing time. And maybe a spark considering his five game pointsless streak.

Waiving Smith seems to be a matter of being done with him. The thing to watch will be who they bring up before they head on their next road trip, if anyone. They already have one extra forward, but if they want to take two, will it be Hintz or someone else?

Maybe don’t take the team to arbitration when you’re the worst forward on the roster next time.

He did the right thing. They wanted him to take a two way deal. Arbitration got him a one way deal.

It's not like he's leaving the best team in the league either. I doubt Gemel is that broken up about it.

From post game:

Montgomery was asked if he’s looking to get Julius Honka back in the lineup.

“You know, our D core is playing so well right now that he’s going to have to wait for that opportunity to happen because of injury and/or someone not playing well enough,” Montgomery said.

See you at the crossroads, Julius. There's no way he's getting any playing time at this point. Eventually they'll have to trade him, right?

It doesn’t look good for Honka. What trade value does a #10 defenseman have? When everyone gets healthy it’s hard to imagine him staying around as the #7 instead of Bayreuther. There’s a nonzero chance he gets waived.

Someone will give up a 4th - 6th rounder all because he was a first round pick. It’s also no risk because he’s cheap and is an RFA after this season. If he doesn’t work out, a team can let him walk.

That's Monty being really polite about how Julius Honka has likely played his last game as a Star.

In all seriousness, I hope he gets it straightened out somewhere else and goes on to have a nice career. I don't think this is entirely on him. Our development system, particularly when it comes to defense, is atrocious and has screwed up a number of prospects over the last decade.

At this point, it's got to be a personality thing, right? The AHL guys get manhandled or cougj up the puck every other shift, and get 15 mins. This is Honka's third coach who won't give him the time of day. Maybe he's just an a-hole or something.

He probably does. I hope he proves me wrong somewhere else, but I don't think he will.

It's weird. He has shown flashes of brilliance in the past. But, nothing lately.

He's too small, which I pointed out the day he was drafted.

His size would be fine if he did the offense thing well, but you can’t be small, bad at defense, and bad at offense.

It's interesting to see Spezza quietly get demoted to the 4th line over the last couple of games. Don't let the lines tweeted by the media guys fool you. They all listed Shore-Spezza-Ritchie as the second line in their pregame tweets, but this was really the 4th line when you look at even strength ice time. Spezza in particular is being used as a PP specialist with Shore being right behind him.

Preparing for life without him. Can Dickinson / Hintz / Faksa take over in the 2nd line spot? Might as well see now.
