They already do that on most icings. And it's not really discretionary. The player either keeps control of the puck or they don't.

ScubaSteve wrote:Not a joke suggestion here, I think they should add the two line pass rule back in. The original idea of taking it out was to add offense and decrease the number of whistles, but it has had the opposite effect. You wanted stretch passes for breakaways, right? And that's what you got, for a while. But you don't get that anymore. Instead, now you get stretch passes which are just tipped into the zone and everyone goes for a change. You've basically legalized icing as long as someone deflects the puck past the red line. Oh and half the time those stretch passes get missed and it goes for icing anyway. Add the two line pass back in and cut it out with those stupid passes, and you may see less dump and change. And if you eliminate the stretch pass/tip/dump-in/change and teams have to exit their own zone with actual skill, you'll probably see more turnovers which leads to more offense.

Yep, failed experiment taking out the red line.

I’d take him in either a shootout or a hot dog eating contest. Or both at once. He’s just that versatile.

https://www.tsn.ca/leafs-matthews-reach ... -1.1252615

The Maple Leafs wrapped up an important piece of the team’s future on Tuesday announcing a five-year, $58.17 million contract extension through 2023-24 for pending restricted free agent.

The deal carries an average annual value of $11.634 million and, according to TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie, $54.5 million of the extension will be paid signing bonuses. Matthews will receive a $15.2 million signing bonus with $700,000 in salary in each of the first two years, followed by a $9.7 million bonus in Year 3 with a $750,000 salary and a $7.2 million bonus in both of the final years with a $7.2 million salary.

Happy Birthday Don Cherry. He's 85 today. Each week this season his ability to stay with it has gotten worse. It's time to hang 'em up, Grapes.

He’s not quitting until he’s chased every euro out of the game.

We're nowhere near Oilers-level disfunction, tho. That might take another season or two.

If anyone was purposefully tanking, it would be that team. It's the only explanation I can think of...

It’s his 3rd agent. It means he’s an immensely gifted Russian winger looking for a big pay day in free agency. Bob probably recommended the agent. He’s a rental this year and teams are lining up. He’ll end up in NY, LA, MON, PHI, or FLA next year. Maybe CHI again if they make room.

The best part, and something you'd never hear Nill say, came from Arizona GM John Chayka on trading away Dylan Strome:

“There is a difference between patience and hope. The latter is not a way to build your organization.”

Quick update: Strome now has 27 points in 31 games for Chicago, including 10 points in Chicago's 6 game win streak which has them two points back of the Blues for the final wild card spot (along with four other teams).

So basically Chicago traded a 2/3-center for a younger 2nd line center with higher upside, who in half a season is now almost their 4th leading scorer.

*Dang ol'* Chayka.

He's centering DeBrincat and Some Rando.

I know Finnish leagues are different, but Puljujärvi (I copied and pasted his name) was never a huge scorer in those whereas Strome dominated the OHL.

Strome also dominated the AHL last season.

Fun act: Puljarvjiji picked #98 as his jersey #, and was the first NHLer to do so since Brian Lawton.... who is considered one of the biggest draft busts in NHL history.
