Jan Kovar sounds like the name of a guest star on Star Trek who you think is a good guy at first but turns out to be a bad guy midway through the episode.

He won his first game, but his pre-season wasn’t too great.

So this list on The Athletic shows the top 100 players under 25 years old (at least according to the writer). What's amazing is how many of the league's top talent falls into this category, which again highlights that the newer norm is that if a player has not made an impact by that age, there's a high chance they aren't going to (sorry Ritchie). Even a player like Janmark shouldn't be expected to evolve much beyond what he is already, which this season has so far been disappointing. It shows to me that GMs should be more aware of this and be quicker to jettison players that others might think have value but haven't made an impact on your team. This is obviously a major failing of Nill, so the future GM I hope realizes this. Basically it says don't sign players like Comeau when you have a logjam of younger players on your roster. Or if you do, then get the *f-bomb* rid of those younger players. The value on players like Ritchie and Dickinson is pretty much gone now, so they basically have to eat their salaries and waive them at this point. No one will trade for them beyond a super low draft pick at best, or swapping another prospect that sucks.

I was also amazed at some of the guys being younger than I thought because it seems like they've been around awhile.

I put this in the NHL thread, but then turned it into more of a Stars rant, but whatever.

Normally, I'd throw in a jab at Nill's antiquated idea of having prospects get overripe and how this article shows it is in sharp contrast to how the rest of the league is now operating, but then I couldn't think of a single player who had been held back by Nill. I guess a few seasons ago there was some thought that Nill was holding back Honka and Dickinson by keeping them in the AHL at ages when other teams were playing their good young players, but it's pretty obvious now those guys just don't have anything special. Nill's talk about ripening prospects was just cover for the fact his prospects were not any good.

The league has some amazing young talent. I can't even keep up with it. Every game I tune in to has an opponent with some very young rookie or second year player who is flying around creating chances, and then I look at the "young" guys the Stars are rolling out who are all 23 to 25 and couldn't score on an empty net. This franchise is broken.

At this point, we could fire the scouting staff and rely solely on Pronman's or Button's rankings and do better.

Also, if you look at the list, three Stars players were mentioned. Not one was drafted by Nill.

Players having fun. Fans having fun.

You can be sure the old guard of hockey media will hate this.

Those are some great jerseys.

*f-bomb* the old guard. They are out of touch.

I love this too and love those jerseys. I hope the Stars come out with a decent looking black third next year that has an actual logo this time.

The old guard does hate it. You should have heard Brain Burke on CBC last night. He said he doesn’t like the Millenials getting all cozy with one another before the games either, chatting and playing rock, paper, scissors etc. Saying even if they don’t feel the hate for the opposing team, they need to act like they do for the fans. Ha ha. But I admit, I agree.

There is some legitimate hate out there that just naturally happens through the course of games. It's not something you can manufacture. I guess the NHL brass didn't learn anything from their failed attempt at doing so by forcing fans to sit through EIGHT *fargin'* GAMES against every opponent in their team's division every year.

That said, there is no need for every player of every team to hate every player from opposing teams.

Also, Brian Burke is a moron so I'm not surprised by this.

If you're interested in a nerdy behind-the-scenes of a suspension hearing, Bettman's full ruling on the Wilson suspension is available to read:

The salary decline is being matched by his play declining.

Unfortunately for the Oilers, he contract is structured in a way that he's not even valuable as a guy who can help a team hit the cap floor. His cap hit vs salary never gets far enough in the other direction where a poor team will take him just to hit the floor.
