I'm kinda surprised Edmonton didn't go for Coach Q. Seems like too perfect a fit there.

So much for the "retirement" cover story. He was fired by the Stars lol.

Q can do better. Taking a job for a team likely about to clean out its front office would mean he doesn't know who his GM would be next season.

He's probably better off waiting for the summer when Hitch and the front office is cleaned out.

Yeah, I'm sure he'll be great with all the young kids they have.

That's exactly what I thought. In fact, I had it first, I just didn't post it.

He will successfully cut McDavid's offense in half and slow him down to half-speed so he's a great two-way mouth-breather who whines because the team won't pay him for sitting on his ass.

The Oilers are about to head into the easiest part of their season schedule --a bunch of games against their own shitty division-- so it'll be nice to see the overreaction to the Hitchcock 'bump' before it all collapses in March.

He was told not to coach here any longer if that's what you mean.

What, he's going to turn them into a non-playoff team?

Crap like this is why NHL teams keep hiring retreads.

Do they just have a stock article about Hitch that they used from last year and just crossed out the team name?

Man, for real. I cannot believe he somehow got another job after what happened here last season.

It’s the same reason our wonderful GM brought him in last season...Hitch is the Structure Sherriff and doesn’t give two shits about pissing off players.

Apparently, he lost 80 pounds this summer. Good for him. I remember him doing that in his early Dallas days for a while but then he let himself go again...

Hitchcock got his first win. He will be a good stop gap for them, which I think he probably knows, and will teach them to be better players. I’m rooting for him.

Interesting article from DGB:

https://theathletic.com/609053/2018/10/ ... am-is-run/

How many of today’s 31 GMs are on at least their second chance at the job? If anything, we might think that the old boys’ club effect would be even more pronounced here. GM jobs don’t open up very often and they typically require plenty of experience, so you might expect to see the same old faces being recycled through the league.

But we don’t. In fact, only 10 of the league’s current GMs are on their second full-time job. (It’s 11 if you count Jeff Gorton’s interim stint with Boston, although that only lasted a few months.) Two-thirds of today’s GMs are on their first shot at the job. And only one GM in the entire league, Lou Lamoriello, has done it for more than two teams.

That has to change the way an NHL GM feels about his job. More importantly, I wonder if it changes the way an NHL GM actually does his job.

It would almost have to, right? I suspect I might do my job differently if I knew it was my last chance. I’m guessing you would too. And we’re not working dream jobs in NHL front offices that we spent our entire career building toward. It’s only natural to start looking at pitches differently if you know you only get one swing of the bat.

As just one example, we’re often told that big trades don’t happen these days because of the salary cap, and because they’re too complicated, and because they’re just too hard to put together in a limited amount of time. But what if that’s not it? What if we don’t see bold, aggressive trades anymore because NHL GMs know that if they come out on the losing end, it could literally cost them their career?

There's a lot more at the link, but he may be on to something here. However, that makes Nill's inability to really improve things all the more maddening - if this is his shot, swing for the fences. It's not like it's going to get worse.

He's so good. Remember when Benn and Seguin we're outskating guys to create breakaways? Those were the days.

Seguin was one of the fastest guys around when he got here, but I don't think I've seen him beat anyone with speed since the Achilles injury.

And Jamie, it's some combination of lack of effort and breaking down Brenden Morrow style.

Jamie Benn is essentially half Mike Modano and half Brenden Morrow.

The bad halves.

Remember, Jamie Benn has two baboon hips now. While you might think that would make him faster, it clearly has not.
