Stars sign Val Nichushkin for 2 yrs at $2.95 million each

Postby Troy McClure » Sun Jul 01, 2018 11:14 am

$2.95 million for a dude who was something like the 40th best player in a second tier league. This is Nill's hubris at work. This was his pick, so he's determined to make it work even if it's done by wasting a roster spot and cap space.

Now I can wear my Val Nichushkin sweater at the AAC again.

I mean, I guess I’d rather give Val a spot than Elie or Ritchie or whoever, but I’m not terribly impressed.

I can't wait to be done with Nichushkin. I just don't like the guy for what he pulled.

Can't wait to watch him dent the hell out of the goalie's chest protector next year. He is the best at that since Langenbrunner.

Radulov will hopefully help Val. While way better, he also bolted. Two peas. ;)

Not really. One had scoring touch to begin with. The other did not.

Val's got passing skillz and possession skillz and incredible speed. All those things make the team better. He's not a finisher, but then again, outside of our first line we didn't have too many finishers last season. He'll be a bargain at $3 mil/per.

Val is an improved player from what I have read........bottom line.......his sweater is wearable again.

Wildcard here is Montgomery, can he make a silk purse that polishes the Cup out of a sow's @$$ of second, third, and fourth liners draggin their sticks on line changes?

Oh wait!.........Jamie drags his stick on the first line.........

It's interesting to compare Nichushkin with another young player.

Rookie season
Nichushkin: 34 points in 79 games, strong praise for how he played alongside Seguin and Benn
Devin Shore: 33 points in 82 games, total afterthought of a 3rd/4th liner

Second full season
Nichushkin: 29 points in 79 games, 101 excuses offered, praised for fighting through so much adversity
Devin Shore: 32 points in 82 games, thought by many Stars fans to be the worst player on the team

Thoughts heading into 2018-19 season
Nichushkin: Make him the first line RW! He has so much potential!
Devin Shore: Please trade him or cut him. He's terrible.

I never thought Shore was the worst player. Not by a long shot. Ritchie and Pateryn were tied for that honor.

Still, you are spot on here. I'm not all that excited about Nichushkin returning.

I thought it was a very good sign that Nichushkin could play in the NHL at age 18 and produce offense. I thought he might have a chance to be legitimate star. But the absence of improvement ever since then makes me think he’ll always be a depth player. Especially since his KHL numbers look so unremarkable. It’s hard to get excited about the world’s 200th best minor league forward.

Both Shore and Nichushkin are putting up Vern Fiddler numbers but without any of the grit.

Yeah. If you suck in the KHL, you will definitely suck in the NHL. I can't think of any examples of players with crappy KHL numbers who lit it up in the NHL.

Holy *poo poo*. I just googled this and Radulov scored 71 points and 65 points in his previous two seasons in the KHL. In like 50 games. That's phenomenal.

Yeah, you can even use something like hockey reference to line up ages to see that the very age Nichushkin was struggling to be 40th in the KHL in scoring, Radulov was absolutely destroying the KHL.

I starting to suspect Val might not be as good as Radulov.
