No word on money yet.

Is Polak replacing Pateryn or Hamhuis? Stay tuned.

I guess they felt they needed one more veteran dman. The logjam at D continues though even if they don't sign Hamhuis.

Had to sign someone. Honka may very well have nothing, as Hitch foretold. Heiskanen could bust. Johns or Lindell could regress. There are a lot of question marks.

Mostly Nill sucks at handling the defense. What about Methot? We have him maybe playing somehwere. Seems like they should try to trade Methot.

And if any of those are true, is running to sign Toronto's #7 d-man the answer? An answer?

Maybe this is Hitch’s senior advisor influence.

They've now announced he gets $1.3 million.

Seriously, this signing is an F-----. Polak instantly becomes the worst defenseman on the team. In fact, probably the worst we've had in many years. Can't wait to see him take ice time away from Honka and Heiskanen, and let in three shitty goals in eleven minutes a night.

He is one of the worst players at getting the puck out of the D zone that I have ever witnessed. He coughs up the puck routinely.

He makes Woywitka look like Bobby Orr. I hope he eats 82 healthy scratches. I don't even want him on our AHL team.

Just FYI. Red is bad, blue is good. A number like "2" means, for reference, that 98% of NHL d-men were better at that thing that you were:

Polak played 54 games for Toronto - that chart says it was tracking 15 games. For Honka, the chart tracks 32 games - he played in 42. Not disputing the conclusion necessarily (or that Polak was a bad signing) - but wondering why the charts aren't full season.

Why go for James Neal when you could get 5 Polaks?

15 games of Polak was all they could stomach to watch.

Those other games were amazeballs, though. Clear cherry picking of stats here. He had 27 goals.

Like all advanced stat stuff, it comes down to how much you want to stretch assumptions to reach conclusions. For this one, you have some dude on Twitter who watched 225 of Polak's 952 minutes played last season. Is that a large enough sample size? Were these all even strength minutes? Only even strength minutes? Who knows.

I don't know that I saw more than ten minutes of Polak last season, so I can't say I disagree with his ratings. I did see almost all of Honka's minutes last season, and I think this chart captured his season pretty accurately when it comes to Honka being pretty bad when the puck was on his stick on the offensive side of the center red line.
