Hitch had a different take. Fight like hell to get the puck back in your own end and then heave it up to the neutral zone. Then fight like hell to win it back in the neutral zone and then heave it behind the opponent’s net before going off for a change because you’re now tired from winning two puck battles.

He's skating on his own. Someone posted video of it. He looks like a 45 year old beer leaguer who is skating upright taking slow strides without much extension.

Considering he's not supposed to be back until November, this might be fine. Hell, I don't even know why they'd bother having him skate if this is all he can do.

I don't believe an injured player can be bought out. He is on LTIR and doesn't count against the cap. If you buy him out it does, at least partially and for more years. If you're paying for him anyway, why not hope that you'll get a player that will be able to play in November? If he can't, he can't. The cap space is the only thing that really matters.
