The league did tell him to cut it out this time.

We have the Avery rule, so why not make a Marchand rule? Thou shalt not lick or kiss other men on the ice.

If he did that to me, I'd spear him right in the balls.

They already have a penalty for that - its called unsportsmanlike conduct.

I'm pulling for the Jets to win it all. I'm sick of all the usual suspects winning. Time for a small-market Canadien team to get it.

That Honda commercial narrated by Fred Savage that runs pretty much every TV timeout, he's saying "Clarity Plug-in Hybrid" but it sounds like he's saying "Clarity *fargin'* Hybrid" at the end.

Man, I am sick of all the Vegas love. You can't compare them to any of the other expansion teams because the other expansion teams had their expansion drafts before the salary cap era. The old expansion teams had to take the worst of the worst players from every team. The Knights were gifted players like Neal and Fleury because of salary issues. *f-bomb* them.

Vegas is a great story. And they’re a good team. It’s easy to root for them.

I think the reason people are bitter about Vegas is because they are better than all these other teams that are floundering, like the Stars, which really highlights your own team's stupid lack of success.

If the Jets go on to face the Knights I don't know who I will cheer for. And then the same thing if the Caps make it to the Finals. Part of me wants Ovi to get a Cup. But I'd rather root for Vegas or Winnipeg. Decisions, decisions.

Y'all sound like bullshit establishment Canadian media. Root for Ovi, then the Knights, then whatever is most chaotic after that in order. This isn't hard.

Right, but that's not really my point.

My point is that all these people talking about how the Knights are setting all these records and making history in the playoffs are really just special pleading. The expansion draft in the salary cap era is nothing like the expansion draft before the salary cap.

1991 San Jose Sharks roster: https://www.hockey-reference.com/teams/SJS/1992.html

1992 Tampa Bay Lightning roster: https://www.hockey-reference.com/teams/TBL/1993.html

1993 Anaheim Mighty Ducks roster: http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/leagues/seasons/teams/0002221994.html

1998 Nashville Predators roster: https://www.hockey-reference.com/teams/NSH/1999.html

1999 Atlanta Thrashers roster: https://www.hockey-reference.com/teams/ATL/2000.html

2000 Minnesota Wild roster: https://www.hockey-reference.com/teams/MIN/2001.html

2000 Columbus Blue Jackets roster: https://www.hockey-reference.com/teams/CBJ/2001.html

With the exception of a Manny Fernandez or a Ray Ferarro here and there, those shitty rosters don't even compare to the Vegas roster and it isn't even close. There should be a big fat asterisk next to the Knights' season because they were handed some really nice players because teams could no longer afford to pay them.

Hockey pundits after last year's expansion draft: "Will this Vegas team even get into the double digits in wins?"
Exact same guys 6 months later: "The NHL STACKED this roster! $500 million!"

I mean, I guess I'm being a little too hard because I am so annoyed. They aren't THE most talented roster in the league. But, they are significantly better on paper than any other expansion team's first roster was before the salary cap. I'm not so annoyed with the fact that they are winning as I am with all these people calling it historic and record-setting because it really isn't since you can't compare prior expansion teams to this one.

Well, it's different than the past teams, but it also is historic and record setting. Regardless of how different the expansion draft was, I'm not sure there was anyone anywhere that said that Vegas would make it to the conference finals in their first year.

I'm honestly surprised Vegas didn't get an even better setup than they did considering several owners probably made more money allowing Vegas into the league than they did from ticket sales this season.

Code: Select all

Year   Teams      Fee   Each Owner's Share (all in millions)
1991    SJ        $45      $2.2
1992    Tampa Ott $45      $2
1993    Fla  Ana  $50      $2.1
1998    Nash      $80      $3.1
1999    Atl       $80      $3
2000    CBJ Minn  $80      $2.8
2011    Winn      $60      $2   (relocation fee)
2017    Vegas     $500     $16.7

I didn't quickly find the relocation fees paid to move the Hurricanes, Avs, or Coyotes.

There's a lot of revisionist thinking going on with Vegas. Remember, this roster was almost universally panned as perhaps the worst in the entire salary cap era:

http://www.thehockeynews.com/news/artic ... -18-season

But realistically, a lot of insanely unlikely things had to happen for Vegas to get this far. Like Fleury saving 99% of all 5-on-5 shots through the playoffs and a guy with 15 career goals suddenly morphing into Ovechkin 2.0.

They're well-coached, very fast, extremely lucky, and have beat up some pretty pathetic Pacific teams.

I don't understand the Vegas hate. No expansion team in history has ever performed this well, regardless of how you adjust for the era. I'm curious if any expansion team in US sports history has ever performed this well.

I think a lot of people are just salty that a first-year expansion team is performing better than their chosen team.

McPhee fucked around an awful lot with the expansion draft. Look at this trades section:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017_NHL_ ... aft#Trades

Every single one of these trades should've been vetoed by the league. If we're in the regular draft and I have the second pick, I can't trade you assets in exchange for you NOT drafting a certain player at #1. And even if their roster wasn't constructed on a mountain of bullshit, they have Eakin AND Neal. That alone disqualifies them from being likable.

Pretty sure the league explicitly said Vegas could make side trades in exchange for drafting or not drafting players.

What I get from all of those expansion draft trades is GMs of other teams sure went stupid to protect players who really aren't all that much better than the guys given up.

They were able to end up drafting three players in the top 15 if the draft thanks to those expansion draft trades. They also have a decent number of draft picks in the pipeline, with three second rounders in 2019 and three more in 2020.

Yeah, and Florida handing over 2/3rds of a truly solid second line for absolutely nothing really helped. And Anaheim giving Theodore away in exchange for Vegas selecting Clayton Stoner. I mean... holy *poo poo* who ever thought these were good ideas?

But really it comes down to: would you expect Kari, Landon Bow, and McKenna to stop 94% of the shots they faced next year, and watch as Elie explodes for 43 goals on 25% shooting? Because those two things would probably win us the Central if they happened.

Yeop. For me it goes:

Washington (I want Ovi to get his Cup)
Winnipeg (So Habs fans can STFU about being the last Canadian team to win the Cup)
Tampa Bay (They are due)
Vegas (Pure lulz plus I like Vegas)
