True, but Montgomery's history of player usage is decidedly different than Hitchcock's.

The problem is definitely that multiple coaches incorrectly use the players we draft, not that the players we draft aren’t that good.

I know you're being Steveny, but our players aren't that bad - Oleksiak is now a top four defenseman with the Penguins. That type of thing has happened more than once. That's not to excuse way too many bad drafts from the Stars, but their player development and utilization is terrible, too.

“Top 4” is just a nice way of saying slightly below average defenseman. It’s like being a top 9 forward.

Reading between the lines on this Q&A, I don’t think Montgomery thinks much of how Hitchcock utilized people last year.

What about Julius Honka?

He has great tools. With a lot of things how we will incorporate our defensemen in all three zones, their ability to make good decisions and sound plays that lead to momentum and easy entries, it leans towards his skill set. And I’m excited to watch him get his confidence back, you can tell he is a person that lost his confidence. You could tell he was a person that was kind of throwing pucks away and once he gets the confidence back, what can he add? He’s another person that can really make us so much more dynamic and add to offense. He and Heiskanen coming and being able to gain confidence and add to our d-core is going to add to our scoring. Our secondary scoring will go up just because you’ll have cleaner entries.

That four spots higher than we ever had him. Or Nemeth, another Top Four D-Man. Or as they like to say in Sweden, El Hombre de Quatro Mejor.

Fine, but the Stars kicked him to the curb as a bust. An average (or slightly below or slightly above average) defenseman isn't a bust.

Maybe Ruff and Hitchcock both used Oleksiak incorrectly. But over those 2 or 3 seasons here he had some pretty fair ice time to grab a spot in the lineup and he never did so. Maybe they should have let him "play thru his mistakes", but he made a lot of them, we all saw that.

Right. They tried to hand him a job three consecutive seasons, and he underwhelmed in training camp each time. The Stars certainly bear responsibility for not getting the best out of him, but the guy got endless chances and never did anything with them.

No arguments, but I think that's a failing of the Stars' development program.

I put a lot of the blame on the coaches and front office. It's ridiculous to think of this now, but the only reason Klingberg was even called up at all was because Gonchar got injured. And this is the same braintrust that looked at Kris *fargin'* Russell at the trade deadline and decided that not only did they need to have this worthless POS (who would later cost us at least two games in that St Louis series), but that we should overpay by a huge margin. Playoff teams saw value in Oleksiak and Nemeth. Kindof the same way one third of the roster of the 2016 Superbowl Champion New England Patriots were former Cleveland Browns.

Klingberg was gonna be a star regardless. He was still recovering from injury when he came to play in the AHL. In TC he was just OK, and in training camp too. But once he started to heal and get a few AHL games under his belt it was clear he was going to play with the NHL Stars. And iirc, he never was a scratch. The problem (as some saw it), was that he was not given much PP time right off the bat.

I also love that he killed penalties under Hitch and hope that continues. Seguin too.

I don't know what he hopes to get in arbitration. He's going to get awarded essentially his qualifying offer.

I think so far the arbitrators have lazily awarded the average of the player and team demands. By filing arbitration, he's going to walk away with something like an extra $200k, which I know is pocket change for most of us.

It’s a one year contract with six player options.

I doubt its that much. Smith cleared waivers last week. Elie signed for $735,000, and I think Smith's qualifying offer was like $720,000. So he's going to get put on waivers and then get torn down in an arbitration hearing for $15,000 - $20,000? Hardly seems worth it.

Getting an extra $20k at no cost to him beyond a plane ticket and hotel room seems very worth it for a guy with pretty limited NHL earning opportunity.

Nill said the Stars have multiple arbitration lawyers working on stuff.

My question: why? Do you really need more than one? This is hockey, not some Exxon-GE merger. You can literally look up every single one of Gemel Smith's stats in like eight minutes.

The goal isn't to just present some stats, it's to crush the enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women.
