If Tampa get Karlsson, Nill should immediately ring up Stevie Y and ask about a Kucherov trade.

Would love Kucherov, but would be shocked if that happened.

And if the cost of EK is Heiskanen, then I'm fine passing on that trade for all of the reasons people have already laid out.

I don't think I'd be upset if we moved Heiskanen, and I don't think I'd be upset if we keep Heiskanen.

The offensive difference between Hedman and EK is not that great, and Hedman is a million times better at actual defending. And Tampa can't afford EK, and they REALLY can't afford EK + Ryan. A lot of quality players will have to be shipped out to make that work.

Remember, four of Tampa's defenders are UFAs next summer.

The news that Shea Weber is out 5-6 months following knee surgery also concerns me when talking about giving up the farm for EK. Can you imagine giving up Heiskanen (who then turns into Zubov 2.0) and whatever others assets, signing EK to $11m for seven years, and then having EK's ankle collapse three quarters of the way through the season?

Agreed. To me I'm fine risking Honka turning into a great defenseman (I think he'll at least turn into a good one), but I wouldn't risk Heiskanen. However, if we did make the trade and won the cup this year, I'd be fine that we gave up Heiskanen. I'm just not sure if the team will be good enough with EK and a new coach to do that.

Sounds like the price is too high, maybe hire a shaman to take the developmental spell off of Dallas . . .

He is, but we are also on season four or so of people saying there is no way Tampa Bay can afford to do what they do, and they keep doing it. The crazy thing is they aren't even having to use the kind of dirty pool Lou Lamoriello made famous with the Devils. If we were talking about the Rangers or Montreal, I'd agree they are screwed, but Yzerman is a damn cap wizard.

Unless the Stars are getting a puck mover in another trade they need to keep Honka.

Yzerman's done well, but there's a ticking time bomb in his salary cap:

https://www.capfriendly.com/teams/lightning

Kucherov (100 points), Gourde (64 points), and Point (66 points) currently make a combined $6.5 million. Those three guys are going to make your cap wizardry look like a level 22 epic sorcerer. (I originally typed 'spic sorcerer'... and thought about leaving it that way for a moment).

But all are either UFA or RFA next season. I guess he could trade McDonagh and his insane contract for the space...

Every GM in the NHL would love to have the problem of having too many good young players. This isn't a problem. It's an opportunity.

Yzerman will spin those deals into trades that are incredibly beneficial to Tampa Bay.

Here's other stuff he said

He also said Dallas is not looking at signing Karlsson to a contract extension as part of the trade. They will take him without a contract extension.

Nobody wants Ryan and his contract.

So the Stars would acquire Karlsson without an extension?? If that is true, then what the hell would the Stars be willing to include in a deal? If Heiskanen or hell, even Honka, were included in that sort of trade then Nill should be fired on the spot. That makes no sense.

It means they'd extend him later on. It wouldn't be an requirement in the trade before it happened. Like what Nill did with Spezza.
Nill has the confidence Karlsson would sign long-term.

I understand the theory, but my point is you can't be giving someone like Heiskanen for what could very well be a one-year rental of EK. If, and my personal view is that it would be a HUGE if, you agreed to give up Heiskanen, it would be the height of stupidity to not have EK locked up.

Maybe we end Spezza or Hanzal to Ottawa in the deal that makes Karlsson a Lightning.

Yeah. But if all the other teams refuse to help them out, we could land Karlsson without giving up Heiskanen. It's a really long shot, but you never know.

I'd help Tampa out of their sticky situation for Sergechev.
