Change of scenery
Wake up call
Better coach/system

Maybe he had it in him the whole time he was here. Maybe they should have ignored his play in camp and the preseason and should have just given him a full season of playing time. I honestly don't know. If you are inclined to think this is more on the Stars, I get it. Their history of failing to develop players makes it easy to say they should not at all get the benefit of the doubt.

Nemeth in particular looked good when he came into the league. Then he got cut and missed all that time in his second season. When he came back, he didn't seem like the same player. More tentative. But he and Oleksiak definitely got enough time to show us their ability. And we kept churning out the D-men, Klingberg, then Lindell, and well, Honka.

The other problem was carrying 8 defensemen, which told these players that they weren't a shoe in. Some players thrive, others don't.

None the less, I've watched a bit of Nemeth this season and he's just OK. Same with Oleksiak. He has some really good play, then I also see him do the same things he did here, not use his size, pinch and be unable to get back or just get owned in his own end.

Plus different, coaches, systems, final call or whatever.

I think it all comes down to coaching. Like Hitch telling Honka he had three seconds to get rid of the puck. Can you imagine if he'd told Klingberg that? We'd have scored like 70 goals last year.

Nemeth had the same issues as Pateryn and Methot. He's terrible at passing and getting the puck out of his own zone.

Troy McClure wrote:It isn't rocket science. You need to acquire young guys who are good. You then need to give those young players opportunity. Those young players then need to seize the opportunity.

Playing young guys just because they are young works fine when your young players are great (See Toronto, Columbus, and Winnipeg), but the league is full of awful teams who play the young guys only to find out their young guys aren't very good (See Arizona, Carolina, and Edmonton).

Carolina is in the middle of the two. The team's defense core is very good, which is mostly made up of young players they've developed under Peters. The young forwards struggle with being able to consistently finish scoring chances, they also have no older players to lean to for consistent offense. Teams need to have the balance between the two, not all young or all old. Which is the issue in Arizona and Edmonton.

SaintAngerBH wrote:Yeah, but why is Oleksiak suddenly doing well with Pittsburgh?

A big factor is being in the lineup game in game out, allows the player to just play, instead of being afraid to make a mistake that'll lead to a scratch the next game. If a player is struggling for awhile then yeah a game or two off is needed, but not being a consistent yo-yo.

If it's a skilled younger player, then start them in the offense zone a lot, to play to the players strength and try to have them out there with other players who are skilled. Don't be leaving them on the 4th line with players who don't fit how they play, or trying to change their style completely. Put them in the best chance to help the team out.
Consistency is a huge issue with most younger players, especially say Gurianov. He has the raw talent to be a top six forward in the NHL, he's just so inconsistent and doesn't take advantage of his shot enough. Once he finds consistency, he'll be really good in the NHL.

I wouldn't mind if we signed Kovalchuk, so long as it wasn't for 5 years. Someone will throw stupid money and term at him though. I wouldn't be upset with two years at $5MM per.

That's third-pairing d-man money for most teams. I bet he gets twice that.

At his age, he probably just wants to win, so salary is probably dependent on the team.

I wouldn't bet on that. Some players legit don't care about winning and will take the highest bidder.

Hopefully, because otherwise there isn’t much hope of Seguin staying here.

I expect him to do what the other 91 did if the Stars don't get their *poo poo* together this year.

For good reason. Most players who take the discount to help their team win still don’t win. The league is a crapshoot when looking beyond the coming season. If you’re signing a five year deal, you don’t know if the team you’re signing with will be good in three seasons.

Yep, they just posted an "immediate opening" over at the DMN. I guess this might have been a bit of a surprise.

10 Longest Games In NHL History

01) Detroit Red Wings vs Montreal Maroons, 6 OT 1936
02) Toronto Maple Leafs vs Boston Bruins, 6 OT 1933
03) Philadelphia Flyers vs Pittsburgh Penguins, 5 OT 2000
04) Anaheim Ducks vs Dallas Stars, 5 OT 2003
05) Pittsburgh Penguins vs Washington Capitals, 4 OT 1996
06) Vancouver Canucks vs Dallas Stars, 4 OT 2007
07) Toronto Maple Leafs vs Detroit Red Wings, 4 OT 1943
08) Dallas Stars vs San Jose Sharks, 4 OT 2008
09) Montreal Canadiens vs New York Rangers, 4 OT 1930
10) New York Islanders vs Washington Capitals, 4 OT 1987

It always makes me laugh when I'm reminded that we own 30% of the NHL's longest games ever and that I *fargin'* watched all three of those games - which by the way are also the three most recent longest games in history LOL.

Same here. Although I still lament that it even took place. If we had finished off the sweep against San Jose or even won it in 5 instead of going to 6 and playing four overtimes, I think it would have been a different series against Detroit. We may not have beaten them, but I don’t think we would’ve gone down 3-0.

Wait, when did Zubov get hurt? Because that was the dealbreaker.

He played the entire Western Conference Final against the Red Wings. He missed the first-round win over the Ducks and the Game 1 win in San Jose.

While I agree with Señor Scoobs that the Stars probably wouldn't have been down 0-3 to the Red Wings had they finished the Sharks off sooner, they still might have won the series after losing the first two games in Detroit if Marty Turco hadn't played so poorly in Game 3.

While it was too late, Turco did finally win one in Detroit. I guess that would have been game 5. One of my best sporting moments, in a house full of Wings fans. Didn't have to say a word. Of course they got the last laugh. Still. :)

That Wings series was frustrating, because the first two rounds they played an aggressive style that they hadn't really played all season, and scored a pair of lopsided upsets against the West's top teams. Then against Detroit, they went back to Tippett-style "protect a no-goal lead" B.S., and went down 3-0, before they got their swagger back for 4 and 5.

*f-bomb* the DMN. The DMN can go skullfuck its dad with its grandmother's giant throbbing *hot beef member*.
