I’m glad this game is on. I didn’t want to watch political BS.

Over the weekend, Honka made an awesome play to set up a goal. He’s clearly still too good for the AHL. It’s time he starts to show he can bring some of the same offensive creativity to the NHL.

Hitch needs to break up the big three for the rest of this game. They're getting dominated by the Kings top line.

Kings go up 2-0. That's ballgame. The Stars have nothing tonight.

Yeah, this is a loss. Also, I'm sure the Stars are tired from that extra time off.

The Stars have yet to win when being down after the end of the second period.

Also winless when trailing at the end of the third period.

What a *poo poo* effort the last and current games have been after some lights out play in the preceding two.

The Stars will probably be 9th in the conference when tonight's games conclude.

Troy, yes.

Jason- I’m so sick of hearing about Honka’s potential over play. He’s a borderline NHL player, hasn’t pushed play, or made a real difference in any way. Nothingburger.

I want him to be really good, and not advanced stat good. I mean, actual production good.

But this FreeHonka stuff is stupid.

In all fairness the preceding two were Buffalo and Florida.

The thing is Honka has sucked offensively the entire season. He's a much better player than that. Until he starts playing with confidence. Tonight he was playing better offensively generating scoring chances.

As the games get tighter down the stretch and into the playoffs teams will be taking advantage of Pateryn.

Stars lose after the days off around Christmas, bye week, and now All Star Break.

Honka can’t keep riding his AHL résumé forever. He’s supposed to be an offensive dynamo who can specialize on the power play, but he would have to double this year’s output just to rise up to the level of underwhelming.

If he can’t produce on offense then he at least needs to be consistent on defense. If he can’t do either then he’ll be giving up his spot to someone who can. Seriously, big lug Heatherington might accidentally get 3 points if we played him for 25 games and gave him regular power play time.

To put it another way, if your points per game put you on pace to have what Craig Ludwig would consider to be a down season, I don't want to hear about how you need to be freed.

Julie has been defending, just fine. Last night's game was his best as far as pushing the play. And his play was the only positive from last night's game. He's 22 years old. Al Stats may indicate he's already done, but I disgargree.

It's not to say he's already done, but the stats do say he should be a regular by now and would really be peaking in the next couple of years. There are of course exceptions to all statistics, but man, seeing those really opened my eyes as to how changing my expectations of when a player should be a regular contributor.

I'm not even a little worried. His advanced stats last season (in the NHL, not AHL) said he was far and away our best defenseman. Period. His preseason was Bobby Orr-esque. And his style of play that dominated at all levels was IMMEDIATELY stopped once the regular season started.

i.e., it's 100% coaching, not Honka. Hitch isn't blind, I'm sure he saw what we all did. He just wants to reign in Honka in his rookie season before unleashing him later... hopefully in time for the playoff push.

So I got bored and looked it up. Honka, in limited playing time, is:

4th among d-men in points/60 (0.61 to Johns' 0.62), but essentially tied for third
3rd in primary points/60
#1 in Corsi
#1 in Relative Corsi (how he stacks up against the Average Star)
#2 in Goals% (goals scored vs goals allowed while on the ice), just a fraction behind Klinggmann
#3 in Expected Goals%
#5 in PDO (so he hasn't been as lucky as other guys)

So he doesn't have a lot of points, but he hasn't given up any either, in very limited minutes (only Methot has played less). And he seems to be playing well on the third pairing against schlubs. That's not something you can normally say about a rookie defenseman.

Hitch seems to be bringing Honka along extra slowly, probably because with Klingberg going off the charts, Hitch doesn't *need* Honka to score a ton of points. But I suspect Honka will be "freed" sometime before the season ends. He's too good to be kept in a cage forever.

Just before the break Hitchcock said Honka needs to play his game, not be so restrained. Which indicated it’s not Hitchcock holding him back. But who knows?
