Pretty interesting how opposing coaches make the Stars the game for their backup to start.
I got a ranch in downtown Dallas/I buy diamonds by the ton/Chase cuties in my Cadillac/Drill oil wells just for fun/But when it comes to boots, I need a deal/That will fit me right, toe to heel/So I get my boots at Western Warehouse.

I think their starter, Dubnyk is coming off an injury and they're not sure if he can Staylocked down for this one.

This year that trend hasn't been as prevalent, but last year it was downright embarrassing. I'll leave it to #JTONTFJTGM to crunch the actual numbers, but I want to say we faced a backup in like 15 of the final 20 games of the season last year.

Maybe they heard all this 24/7 talk about Hatcher and Zubov, and don't want to embarrass their starter.

I think they're afraid of the yellow laces.

Not much to say. The backup won, but it’s not like he stood on his head. He didn’t face all that many quality scoring chances.

Does Ben Bishop remind anyone else of Antti Niemi at times? He just seems out of position and flails a lot. I dunno. I'm not impressed.

Janmark will get banished back to the lower lines. He scored, but he made a bunch of mistakes tonight, especially on the power play. Time to rotate in the next spare.

Hitch is right. He's also been saying this for a month and a half.

There's a point where no amount of coaching is going to be able to lift a roster half filled with young players of middling promise.

No - not at all. Niemi would seem to be flailing on even routine shots and his stance/style just made every move he made seem awkward. I think when Bishop has looked like he was flailing to me it has been more a result of deflections/bad bounces. There have been some bad rebounds too - like last night (I don't remember which goal) when he stopped the puck and it was right in front of his pads and someone knocked it to the side and in. That is something I would like him to control better.

He's a lot like Niemi, only with better size, positioning, athleticism, GAA, sv%, and overall talent level.

But he's still not stealing wins or standing on his head. He's more competent but not great.

He's stolen a few wins. The Stars looked like crap last night, and Radulov remains the only player that I feel has a chance to score any time he's on the ice. But Bishop has been providing what we've said we needed for a long time - league average goaltending, with the occasional flashes of brilliance. It's not his fault the Stars can't get the rest of the game going.

That's all I was going for. Bishop has been fine. He doesn't give up the weak, soul-crushing goals Kari/Niemi did so often the past couple of seasons. He's playing well but not great. He's an upgrade, but he's not a top five guy in the league upgrade. To be fair, he's the 15th highest cap hit among goalies this season, so it's not like he's failing to perform to his contract. If he's giving us league average play, that's right in line with league average cap hit.

I dunno if the nerdstats bear this out, but just going by the eyeball test, he seems a lot like Belfour: doesnt face very many shots (Stars are among the best in the league at suppressing shots), but the ones that do squeak through are high-quality, and more often than not he's got an answer for them (mainly by just being huge).

Considering how lights out Fleury has been playing with an expansion team, is anyone else starting to lament not getting him instead?
