Trade Talk

Stars scouting Columbus
However, I can confirm, and this is according to two separate sources in Columbus, that the Stars have scouted the Blue Jackets heavily this season.

However, the individuals scouting the games in Columbus may be something to read into.

Senior advisor to the GM Les Jackson, assistant GM Scott White, and Stars head professional scout Paul McIntosh have all watched the Blue Jackets at least once this season. That’s a trio that is somewhat involved in the decision-making process for the Stars, so they could be doing their homework for a potential future move with the Blue Jackets.

On CBC's Hotstove Saturday.
Friedman said Spezza's name has came up in trade talks lately, but the Stars preference is to keep him for his offense.

LeBrun TSN on Columbus

"Here’s the thing: They’re eight-deep at the NHL level on defence and teams are calling about their defence. We know that Ryan Murray’s name was in the Colorado conversation [in a possible trade for Matt Duchene], but it does not mean they’re shopping him or looking to move him, but the bottom line is this: They have defencemen, they’re ready to move one and they want to get better up front.”

Spezza needs to at least score a few more goals before a team is going to give up anything AND take on his 7+ mil salary for this season and the next.

Friedman was on NHL Network said the same things about Spezza as the other day, also mentioned teams Columbus and Anahiem.

Trading Spezza right now would be selling awfully low

Or maybe this is his peak value. Maybe the farther away we get from his 30 goal season a couple of years ago the less GMs value him.

Yeah, I don't think he'll ever approach that number again. He just doesn't bring much more to the table than turnovers and passes to no one in particular anymore.

His line mates are no one in particular, so his passing is still right on the money.

He can play with Spezza and Jamie on the Overpaid And Past Their Prime Line.

He’d be a big upgrade on the wing, and he’s UFA. But too slow? Wouldn’t want to give up much.

I kind of figure Stars will makes some moves. Not necessarily Nash. But some winger.

He's also hella expensive. I believe he would drain all of our remaining salary cap, making call ups problematic. Unless we sent Spezza the other way.

Nash would consume the remaining cap money this season, but he's also a UFA after this. There's no long-term risk of being stuck with him. I wonder if Nill could convince the Rangers to take Ritchie back. That would help the cap crunch.

He's on a 24 goal pace. He's one of these guys I assume is 40 because he's been in the league since he was 18, but he's also "only" 33. I get why Nill would make a deal for Nash. Spezza looks to only be heading in one direction, so if there is any hope of a playoff run where he contributes, this may be it. And lord knows, Spezza needs some upgrades on his wingers.

Sorry. But if they take Spezza, sell, sell, sell. And they can definitely throw in Ritchie.

I do agree with this. Nash is probably better than Spezza at this point.

Nash would be pretty low risk. And I think he can only be traded to 19 teams. That limits the number of suitors, so hopefully keeps the price down.

Although it would be awesome if Nill could swing a deal for someone like Saad or a young, talented, long-term option.

Like Troy mentioned he's UFA at the end of the year, so I'd be cool with acquiring him (especially if Ritchie goes back the other way).
Keep Spezza though. They both might light old man fires under each other's old man asses. It's unlikely but it'd be cool.
That Hanzal's so hurt right now.

If you can move Spezza, and next years contract, you move him. Doubtful, tho.

I don't see Dallas advancing deep in the playoffs without a real second line, and it's hard to imagine a real second line with Spezza playing the way he is. He also doesn't fit in Hitch's system since he is the top forechecker and has no containment.

But, it seems unlikely you get that guy right now.

You just have to pray Spezza gets a blood transfusion or takes some human growth hormone.

If that Hanzal could not be so hurt, he's your 2nd line center and Spezza could move down to 4th line, which would be GREAT for a 4th line center. But if you can move his contract, buh bye. Dickinson will be a fine 4th line center for now.
