To follow in the footsteps of those who like to post every time a former Star d-man gets a point, I thought I'd check in with some guys the Stars could have acquired for next to nothing for some help on the second line:

Thomas Vanek: Acquiring Vanek would have cost the Stars an AHLer like Cole Ully
Vanek - 4 games played with zero points recorded
Ully - 0 NHL games played (probably ever)

Patrick Maroon: Acquiring Maroon would have cost a 3rd rounder and some no name prospect with no hopes of making the NHL
Maroon - 4 games played with 1 goal and 3 assists
Nothing - 0 NHL games played

Evander Kane: Acquiring Kane would have cost a 2nd round pick and someone like Brett Ritchie
Kane - 3 games played has 1 goal and 4 assists
Ritchie - 5 games played has 1 goal and 1 assist (which actually is something of a hot streak for him)
I got a ranch in downtown Dallas/I buy diamonds by the ton/Chase cuties in my Cadillac/Drill oil wells just for fun/But when it comes to boots, I need a deal/That will fit me right, toe to heel/So I get my boots at Western Warehouse.

Also of note is that Ryan Hartman, who was traded the Predators and has term (i.e., not a rental), is the one who scored the game winner against us last night.

This is why I call bullshit on Nill's comments about the prices being too high. But, I am more concerned with his comments about how he is happy with the team as is. Surely, he can't be serious.

Adding any of those guys would still lead to a five game exit against Nashville or Winnipeg.

It's all about facing Vegas in the first round, Steven.

Evander Kane would not have scored 5 points in 3 games with Spezza at center.

He’d have more than Ritchie. That’s all that matters.

We also could've had Taylor Hall for whoever our equivalent was of Adam Larsson (Demers, maybe?):

Probably somebody more like Lindell (particularly since I believe Demers was a free agent)

Lindell was just a 3rd round draft pick when that trade went down. We'd probably have to have traded Klingberg to get him. Chiarelli has a hard-on for trading superstars for Swedish dudes.

The hard on was for Larsson at one point being the projected #1 pick leading up to the 2011 draft, the year right after Hall, so in his mind it was even LOL.

I guess we could've traded, like, Eric Cole for Filip Forsberg too.

So according to the Ottawa media, "some Western Conf. team" had finalized a deal for Karlsson and Bobby Ryan, and Ottawa backed out at literally the last second.

I doubt it was Nill, but... we can dream.

It would've had to have been Kari and Spezza going the other way to make the cap work, and we had to back out because Bishop got hurt?

It was either the Sharks or Vegas.

I saw some fairly cogent speculation about it being Vegas.

Relax. It's the first hat trick of his entire 9-year CAREER. No joke.
Even Faksa had one before him.

Evander Kane sucks.

Yeah, wouldn’t want to trade magic beans for a guy who consistently scores 20+ goals and 35-40 points every year. That’s just crazy talk.

Look at the bright side, Kane's four goals in the Sharks' 7-4 win in Calgary were the difference between the Flames now being four points behind the Stars instead of only two.

Chances are the players taken with the middling picks given up for Kane will never score four total goals in the NHL.

Not necessarily true. One of them could pull a Fabian Brunnstrom.

I dunno man, Buffalo's drafting record is pretty solid.
