With the exception of Hanzal and Methot, this team has been very healthy all season, so I can’t wait for this spell of minor injuries being blamed as the reason why they slip in the standings.

It's the "at least" part of that tweet that scares me.
Our worst nightmare is coming true at the most important time of the season LOL.
That Hanzal's so hurt right now.

Help us, Kari Lehtonen, you're our only hope.

Honka did make a few nice breakout passes.
Which is sorely lacking on the defense core. It's just been a tough year for him, lack of points, lack of consistent ice time. He's a far better player then how he has played this year.

This team is just flawed and consistently slow. Getting faster and more skill has to be the top priority in the off-season. Another thing can do is play the best puck possession players each game and give them more ice time. So it can mask the speed issues to some extent of certain players.

How the hell did we go from like the fastest team in the league to the slowest? There wasn't THAT much turnover was there?

Last year's team was slow too. It was two years ago when they actually had a really fast team.

I don't think it has anything to do with footspeed. Speed is all about passing. When we have guys breaking up ice, we look "fast." When we have guys playing conservative on defense and holding back, we look "slow." Exact same guys, totally different systems.

What's interesting to me is with all of the doom and gloom and with how poorly the Stars have played at times, they currently stand fifth in points in the Western Conference, with the fifth best goal differential in the West, fourth best goals against average in the league and ninth best points percentage in the league.

A lot of the consternation really has to do with the way the NHL has set up the playoff system. The Stars really are an above average team in probably the second tier behind probably Nashville, Tampa, Boston and maybe Winnipeg (I still can't put Vegas in the top tier despite their points).

If this team had a second line that was any sort of consistent offensive threat, it could be dangerous.

How about if we hit on even two of the last 10 first round picks? Imagine this team, plus Barzal and Tarasenko.

I think the perception changed after their series of ugly blowout losses where they also had a few stylish wins over the dregs of the East. Through all of that, Hitch started griping game after game about effort, about depth players not pulling their weight, and about the star players not doing enough. Hitch started juggling lines a bit, and fans started to notice the Stars were hovering in the wild card spot but failed to secure a divisional playoff spot. Then came the trade deadline where nothing as added and Hanzal was subtracted.

Up to this final stretch run, the Stars had a home-heavy and easy schedule so far this season. They also have faced almost no injuries. With all of that in their favor, they remain in a wild card spot.

Admit it: Barzal would still be in the AHL for another two seasons, and Tarasenko would be on the PK and fighting with Brian Flynn for fourth line minutes.

Hitch had a couple of updates.

- Hanzal is out in California getting another opinion about his back trouble. That’s not good.

- Bishop is going to be re-evaluated in a couple of days. It means they don’t know how bad it is, so he’s likely out longer than two games.

Hanzal is just one step away from getting illegal surgery from Zubov's guy in the back of a van in Hamburg.

This isn't good.

This explains why he looked so stiff and slow at times. Also why he would disappear from games. A healthy Hanzal is a lot better than the guy we saw.

I'm also ready to say not to expect much from him for the two seasons remaining on his contract. Spinal fusion is serious business for normal people. For a pro athlete in a contact sport, this isn't good at all.

So... can they get out of his contract then? Or at least not count him towards the cap?

He goes on long-term injured reserve, I believe. You can go over the cap by the amount of his cap hit without penalty.

I didn't know he had this kind of history with back surgeries.

http://nhl.nbcsports.com/2018/03/09/wha ... las-stars/

They were at it again this past summer when they went big-game hunting and landed starting goalie Ben Bishop, free agent winger Alexander Radulov, center Martin Hanzal, and defenseman Marc Methot.

Those were pretty much some of the top names available on the free agent market, with Bishop acquired in a trade and signed in May. When added to a core that was already built around star players Seguin, Jamie Benn, and John Klingberg there was plenty of reason for excitement and optimism that this could be a big year for the Stars. Just like there is every year when they make a big splash in free agency.

The results still have not been what you might expect given all of that.

Methot has been hurt a lot and nothing special when he plays.
Radulov has been awesome.
Bishop has been fine.
Hanzal was fighting injuries the whole season and ended up not helping much.

Overall, the team is better for having those additions, but the net positive from those moves have been increasingly offset by the decline of Spezza, the decline of Roussel, Ritchie being bad, and the other young wingers bringing no offense other than Janmark.

I'm torn, y'all.

On one hand we suck ass,
And just making the playoffs is going to be a tremendous chore,
And all of us seem to be in agreement that even if we do make the dance we have no chance of making it past the first round (outside of facing Vegas).

On the other hand we are the 10th best team in the league,
And if we beat the Habs on Tuesday we'll have 84 point in 70 games, which is exactly the same record as the Pens who now lead the Metro ...

So ... WTF?

I'm pretty sure this Central Division pressure has finally gotten to me.
Imagine missing out on the playoffs while still being a top 15 team in the league? It's very very doable.
That Hanzal's so hurt right now.

Yeah, we'd be cruising to a playoff spot in any other division. Just remember: other than Tampa, EVERY team sucks ass. It's just a matter of who sucks ass the least at the worst time.

Even cruising in by playing in a weaker division, I'd still expect a quick exit if they don't turn their offensive game around. Over their last 13 games (last month), they're scoring 1.46 goals a game. They also gave up 2.69 goals a game over the same span, so maybe it's more than the offensive game.
