A lot of the issues are from the 09-12 drafts, 08 the didn't have a first. Three straight wasted first round picks(09-11), that is what's hurting the team the most. Which was before Nill took over.
Of Nil's picks
Some players need ice time. (Dickinson, Honka). Nichushkin's the one that has hurt the most, going back to Russia. He would've been a strong trade piece, if he didn't work out with the Stars, when you go back to Russia that destroyed his trade value. Selling low on players is a dumb move, unless they're a aging veteran.
Others need time to develop more such as Guryanov, Hintz.

This. It's literally the only scenario where we have the slightest chance of making it to the second round.

Mark's tweet states that Lehtonen is starting in Nashville. Is your joke that you'd prefer Bishop to start that game instead?

Jim Nill must be a massive *kitty kitty*. He puts these young d-men on the roster because he obviously wants them to play yet lets his coaches scratch these kids for the whole season.

By my eyes, Pateryn has been just fine this year. I expected absolutely nothing from him other than being a token #7 healthy scratch, but he has played well enough that he doesn't deserve to lose his spot. I know we want Honka playing, but Pateryn overachieving threw a wrench into that. It's a good problem to have.

I don’t know. Pateryn is a UFA after this season. I’m not sure what is gained by playing him if he’s only a slight bit better than Honka given Pateryn probably won’t be on the team next season.

He's been fine. He has had his moments, but he and Hamhuis are a good pair. Compared to last season, all our D are much improved.

It's OK that Honka sits. He has played enough games that they know what to expect and he's ready if there's an injury. Next year will be a different story.

If Honka is in the long term plans, him sitting is just wasting a year of his entry level contract. It then means the Stars are going to have a small NHL sample to go by when deciding what to do with his next contract.

Pateryn and Hamhuis is a good pair for the other teams, the majority of the time there's a extended shift in the Stars own end, it's them out there. It all starts, because they aren't good getting the puck of their own end. If it results in goals, penalties or scoring chances.

You know I really don’t like that Honka is sitting. But a team has to play the hand dealt. They obviously think Pateryn/Hamhuis is a good pair. And they are. Also Honka has had games to WoW, and he’s played well, but didn’t wrestle the spot away, and Pateryn hasn’t lost it. Johns has also solidified his spot. They are confident Honka can come in and play if necessary. That’s what’s important at the moment, even knowing they might not be as good at getting the puck up. Or that they have to use one year of Honka’s ELC.

No, it just seems higher because he's so small.

Pateryn impressed me two months ago, but he's been pretty brutal lately. Just look at any recent opponent's highlight reel. He's basically been getting dunked on once or twice a night.

Pateryn 'might' turn it around... but Honka might also unleash the beast. Which is more likely?

So long as they keep doing whatever they’re doing with Johns. He’s gone back to being awesome.

Pateryn's biggest issue is his lack of puck skills. He's a very weak passer, so when he's with Hamhuis it's not a good pairing. So when you put them together better teams can take advantage of it. It's easy for Pateryn to get stuck out on the ice for very long shifts, due to his lack of puck skills and getting the puck out of his own zone.
Yeah he's physical, solid defensively.

I think you guys are greatly overstating Pateryn’s weaknesses. If he was getting scored on all the time, we’d see it in his +/-, but we don’t. He’s an even or plus guy more often than not. That’s not to say you guys are wrong about his passing or transition game troubles, but it’s not like the Stars are getting scored on left or right when he’s out there.
