I think he sounds like he'll be a good player. Got no problem with that.

But at #13th overall....?

Also pissed that the Sharks got Markely. Fuckers.

Drafting someone who is expected to be a third-line center in the first round is a sure way to keep us out of the playoffs for the next few years.

Nill is just trying to get fired so he can collect unemployment. I don't think you can collect unemployment if you resign.

In some ways, he could be Faksa’s replacement. Faksa took so long to develop that he’ll be UFA eligible in three seasons.

Faksa’s slow path to the NHL wasn’t by design, but it speaks to why it is a very bad idea to use the overripe method of player development. With UFA age down to 27, if you bury your prospects until they are in their mid 20s, you’re only getting a handful of price controlled seasons out of your draft picks.

In other words, fire Nill.

Douglas Curtis? That sounds like one of the names that NHL 2004 would make up when you sim 15 seasons deep into campaign mode.

He’s awesome at line changes.

This is what I like to hear. I still can't believe the idiotic teams that passed on him:

Edit: *Dang ol'* *fargin'* sportsnet. I don't know why they link straight to the damn video. Anyways, the article is about Zadina wanting to extract revenge on the three teams that inexplicably passed on him by "filling their nets with pucks."

So from what I've read, it seems our second 4th, our 5th, and our 6th round picks were all huge steals.

So Nill's got that going for him.

Here's an interesting twist. The dude the Stars drafted in the 4th round is 20 years old. He was originally drafted by the Panthers a couple of years ago but ended up back in the draft when he refused to sign with them because he didn't want to be part of their organization.

He certainly cost himself some bonus money if the Stars sign him, but I didn't look up how much. I also can't see anything to explain the fall to the fourth round. Was it because he's just not developing that well, or was it because GMs view him as a problem for saying no to the Panthers?

It's definitely not his stats, because he scores a ton.

So far everything I've read about Dellandrea is very positive. A 17 year old basically holding together an absolutely terrible team (this is the same team that quit en masse on the owner when he fired the coach for not playing the owner's son, if you remember). And then there's his advanced stats (for you Troy):

The seventh rounder the Stars drafted is the first Jamacian-born player drafted by an NHL team.

It's not solely a PR pick like some of those joke picks the Mavs have done. He was adopted by a family in Manitoba and grew up playing hockey.

This is a good read. The writer physically went to the draft and talked to people, and found out that, despite what all the public draft boards said, no NHL team really thought Veleno was first-round material:

https://www.defendingbigd.com/2018/6/25 ... teaux-nill

I wonder about this 'secret' consensus: was it a bunch of scouts with better knowledge than the "draft media" guys, or was it good-ol'boy consensus herding, where one scouts talks *poo poo* about a prospect at a hotel bar in Canada, and six months later everyone's repeating the same thing? I guess we'll find out in 5-6 years.

You always do wonder how full of *poo poo* your average draft analysis expert is. I bet if they were truly informed, they'd be the scouts instead.

I'm going to say like 70-80% full of *poo poo*.

Not that the scouts are all that informed, according to the historical math. It would be interested to see an analysis that compares actual draft vs. performance to analysis rankings vs performance. Which one is better? Because if it's the latter, *fargin'* fire everyone.

Cory Pronman goes back and evaluates his rankings after a few years.

So I angrily flipped through The Hockey News' draft preview magazine while at Wal-Mart and it should be noted that they had Dellandrea ranked #16 out of 100 prospects. I guess that's good.
